Establishing Macintosh OS 9.x Dial-Up Connection

(Establishing a PPP connection to the Internet via WSU)

[ CaTS | Docs ]

For a Macintosh to connect to the Internet using the WSU modems, certain software components are required. The three Control Panels the Macintosh must have are TCP/IP, Modems, and Remote Access:

TCP/IP
TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) is the language computers use to communicate on the Internet. Mac OS 7.5.5 and greater include the newer, Open Transport -- Apple's version of TCP/IP.

Modems
The Modem Control Panel allows for the selection of what modem is used and what port is used to connect to the computer.

Remote Access
This Control Panel is used to establish the PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) connection. To configure this, you need your CAMPUS username and password along with your ISP phone number.

Once a connection has been established, an application such as Netscape Communicator can be used to browse World Wide Web sites, or send and receive email.

Configuring Your TCP/IP Control Panel

  1. From the Apple Menu, select Control Panels.
  2. Select TCP/IP.
  3. Select PPP on the "Connect Via" pop-up menu.
  4. Select "Using PPP Server" in the Configure field.
  5. Enter 130.108.1.20 in the Name Server Address field.
  6. Enter wright.edu in the Search Domains field.
  7. Close the TCP/IP control panel and save the changes.

Establishing a Connection

  4. From the Apple Menu, click Control Panels and open Remote Access.
  5. Enter your CAMPUS username in the Name field.
  6. Enter your CAMPUS password in the Password field.
  7. Enter the phone number for the appropriate WSU modem pool:
    Faculty: 879-8968
    Staff: 878-3473
    Students: 879-8720
    School of Medicine: 879-8958
CAUTION: If the above number is NOT in your local calling area, your phone company will charge you long distance fees.
