Instructions in this document include the following:

News on Pine (UNIX)

Accessing and Subscribing to Newsgroups
  1. Telnet to a UNIX host and login as you would normally.
  2. Type pine at the > prompt.
  3. Press L to enter the folder list.
  4. Press the down arrow to select the news section of pine.
  5. Press A.
  6. Hold CTRL and press T to view the entire newsgroup list.
    or

    Enter a keyword or a subject to get a list of newsgroups that contain that word (ex. guitar, cooking, fishing, computer, etc.) and press [Enter].
  7. Use the up and down arrow keys to browse through the list of groups.
  8. Select a group and press S.
  9. Press [Enter].

To subscribe to more newsgroups, repeat steps 1-5.

Unsubscribing to a Newsgroup

  1. Select a newsgroup to which you want to unsubscribe.
  2. Press D.
  3. Press Y when asked if you wish to unsubscribe.

Reading News Messages

  1. Select a newsgroup.
  2. Press [Enter].
  3. Use the up and down arrow keys to browse the list of messages.
  4. Select a message and press [Enter] to read it.
  5. Press I to return to the message list when you are finished reading the message.
  6. When you are finished with a newsgroup, press L to return to the folder list.

To exit Pine, press Q.

News on Netscape Navigator 3.0x

News Settings
  1. Select Mail and News Preferences from the Options menu.
    A window containing several tabbed menus will appear.
  2. Click the Servers tab.
  3. Enter mail.wright.edu for both the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server and the Incoming Mail (POP3) Server.
  4. Enter your UNIX username in the POP3 User Name field.
  5. Choose None for Maximum Message Size.
  6. Enter news for the News (NNTP) Server field.
  7. Click the Identity tab.
  8. Enter your name, e-mail address, and reply-to e-mail address (if different from your e-mail address) in the appropriate fields.
  9. Enter Wright State University in the Your Organization field.
  10. Click {OK} to save your settings.

Subscribing to Newsgroups

  1. Choose Netscape News from the Window menu.
    The
    Netscape News window will appear.
  2. Choose Show All Newsgroups from the Options menu.
  3. Browse the list of newsgroups.
  4. Right-click a newsgroup and select Subscribe.
  5. Select Show Subscribed Newsgroups from the Options menu when you are finished subscribing.

Unsubscribing to Newsgroups

  1. Choose Show Subscribed Newsgroups from the Options menu.
  2. Right-click a newsgroup and select Unsubscribe.

Reading News Messages

  1. Click a Newsgroup to reveal a message list.
  2. Browse the messages and click a message to read it.
News on Netscape Communicator 4.0x

Note:
You must have Netscape Messenger (comes with the Standard download).

News Settings

  1. Select Preferences… from the Edit menu.
    The
    Preferences window will appear.
  2. Double-click Mail & News Groups.
  3. Click Identity.
  4. Enter your name, e-mail address, and reply-to e-mail address (if different from your e-mail address) in the appropriate fields.
  5. Click Mail Server.
  6. Enter your UNIX username for the Mail Server User Name field.
  7. Enter mail.wright.edu for both the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server and the Incoming Mail (POP3) Server.
  8. Click Groups Server.
  9. Enter news in the Discussion Groups (News) Server: field.
  10. Click {OK}.

Subscribing to Newsgroups

  1. Choose Message Center from the Communicator menu.
    The Message Center window will appear.
  2. Right-click News and choose Subscribe to Discussion Groups….
    A window called
    Communicator: Subscribe to Discussion Groups will appear.
  3. Browse through the list and select a newsgroup.
  4. Click {Subscribe}.
    Repeat steps 3 and 4 to subscribe to more groups
    .
  5. Click {OK} when you are finished.

Searching for Newsgroups

  1. From the Communicator: Subscribe to Discussion Groups window, click the Search for a Group tab.
  2. Enter a keyword or subject in the Search For: field (ex. guitar, cooking, fishing, computer, etc.).
  3. Click {Search Now}.
  4. Select a group and click {Subscribe}.
  5. Click {OK} when you are finished.

Unsubscribing from a Group

From the Message Center window, right-click a group and choose Remove Discussion Group.

Reading News Messages

  1. From the Message Center window, double-click news.
  2. Double-click a newsgroup.
    The
    Netscape Discussion window will appear.
  3. Browse through the list of messages and click a message to read it.

Note:
Clicking + will expand a thread of messages.

News on Internet Explorer 4.0x

Note:
You must have Outlook Express (comes with the Standard download). If you do not have Outlook Express, you may add it to Internet Explorer 4.0 by visiting Microsoft’s web site at www.microsoft.com.

Creating a News Account

While in Internet Explorer or Outlook Express,

  1. Choose News from the Go menu.
    If you do not have an account set up, the
    Internet Connection Wizard will appear. If the Internet Connection Wizard does not appear, skip to the Subscribing to Newsgroups section of this document.
  2. Enter a name in the Display field and click {Next}.
    This name will appear in the
    From: field when you post a message.
  3. Enter your e-mail address in the E-mail Address field and click {Next}.
  4. Enter news in the News Server field and click {Next}.
  5. Select Log on Using: and enter your UNIX login in the News Account Name field. Click {Next}.
  6. Enter a name for your News account. This name can be anything you wish. Click {Next}.
  7. Select Connect using my Local Area Network (LAN) if you are connected to a network. Select Connect using my Phone Line if you connect to the Internet by modem. Click {Next}.
  8. Click {Finish}.

Subscribing to Newsgroups

After you have followed the above instructions, you will see a window that reads:

"You are currently not subscribed to any newsgroups. Would you like to view a list of available newsgroups now?"

  1. Click {Yes}.
    The
    Newsgroups window will appear.
  2. Browse through the newsgroups or type a keyword or subject (ex. guitar, cooking, fishing, computer, etc.) in the Display Newsgroups Which Contain: field.
  3. Double-click groups to which you would like to subscribe.
  4. Click {OK} when you are finished.

To subscribe to newsgroups at anytime, click {Newsgroups} (located in the toolbar) and follow steps 2 and 3.

Unsubscribing to Newsgroups

Right-click a newsgroup and choose Unsubscribe from this newsgroup.

Reading News Messages

  1. Choose News from the Go menu.
  2. Double-click a newsgroup.
  3. Browse through the list of messages and click a message to read it.

To return to the list of subscribed newsgroups, choose News from the Go menu.

News on TCP/Connect 4

Configuring News (Student Labs)
  1. From the Edit menu, select Configure.
  2. Scroll down the menu on the left side and click News.
    A menu will appear on the right side.
  3. Click the Folder for News Files: field and drag to Select a Folder....
  4. Click {Desktop} (found on the right side of the menu).
  5. Double-click Macintosh HD and click Download Area.
  6. Click {Select Download Area} (found at the bottom of the menu).
  7. Close the configuration window by clicking the box found in the top left corner.

Configuring News (Networked Faculty and Staff)

  1. Create a folder on your hardrive called News.
  2. From the Edit menu, select Configure.
  3. Scroll down the menu on the left side and click News.
    A menu will appear on the right side.
  4. Click the Folder for News Files: field and drag to Select a Folder....
  5. Locate the folder you created in step 1 and select it.
  6. Click {Select your folder’s name} (found at the bottom of the menu).
  7. Close the configuration window by clicking the box found in the top left corner.

Accessing News

  1. From the Service menu option, select News.
    You will see a box called
    News.
  2. Enter news when prompted for the name of the News server
  3. Click {OK}.
  4. You will see the News reader window, which is divided into three panes: Newsgroup, Summary, and Article.

Newsgroup Pane
This pane contains all of the newsgroups to which you have subscribed. At first, you will only be subscribed to two newsgroups: news.announce.newusers and news.newusers.questions. After you subscribe to more newsgroups, those groups will appear in this pane.

Summary Pane
This pane contains information about the News articles: the subject, who the message is from, and the date which it was posted.

Article Pane
This pane contains the article you are viewing.

Subscribing and Unsubscribing to Newsgroups

  1. From the Service menu, select Edit Newsgroups.
    You will see a window called
    Edit Newsgroups, which shows the newsgroups to which you are and are not subscribed.
  2. To Subscribe, click and drag a group from the Unsubscribed list to the Subscribed list.
  3. To Unsubscribe, click and drag a group from the Subscribed list to the Unsubscribed list.
  4. Click {OK} when you are finished subscribing/unsubscribing.

Reading News Messages

  1. Select a newsgroup from the Newsgroups pane of the Browser window.
    You will see a list of articles for that group in the
    Summary pane.
  2. Select an article from the list by clicking on it.
    The article will display in the
    Article Pane.
  3. When you are finished reading articles from one group, you can select another group from the Newsgroup pane.

Exiting News

To exit News, click the Close Window box found in the upper left corner of the window.
