Attachments in Common E-Mail Utilities

Attachments are a quick and easy way to send a file to a remote user. From a personal letter that is too long for e-mail, to a JPEG image of your new car, attachments are easy to incorporate into an e-mail message. Below are instructions for including attachments in some common e-mail applications (Pegasus Mail, Netscape Mail, Pine, and Microsoft's Outlook Express). The underlying concept is similar for most mail applications.

Attachments in Pegasus Mail
Note: Double-clicking the [..] item will move you up a directory.
  1. Compose a message as you normally would.
  2. Instead of sending the message, click the {Attach} button.
  3. Select a directory from those listed by double clicking to open it.
  4. Select the file type. If your file type is not listed, select binary.
  5. Select the file by highlighting it and clicking {Add}.
  6. Click {Send}.
Attachments in Netscape 3.0x
  1. Open Netscape.
  2. Select Netscape Mail from the Window menu.
  3. Click {To: Mail} to begin a message.
  4. Click the {Attach} button.
  5. Click {Attach File} and locate the desired file.
  6. Click the file and then click {Open}.
  7. In the Attachments window, click {OK}.
  8. Complete the rest of the message and send it as you normally would.
Attachments in Pine
To attach a file to a document in Pine, make sure the file is saved on your UNIX account. To transfer a file to your account, you must use FTP. Consult one of CaTS FTP documents to learn how to use FTP.
  1. Telnet to a UNIX host and login as you would normally.
  2. Type pine at the prompt and press [Enter].
  3. Press c to compose a new message.
  4. Press the down arrow key twice to select the attachment (Attchmnt) field.
  5. Hold Ctrl while pressing t to view a list of files on your account.
  6. Use the direction arrow keys to highlight a file and press s.
  7. Complete the rest of the message and send it as you normally would.
Attachments in Outlook Express 4.x
  1. From the Compose menu, select New Message.
  2. From the Insert menu, select File Attachment....
  3. Locate your file, select it, and click {Attach}.
  4. Complete the rest of the message and send it as you normally would.
Attachments in Netscape Communicator 4.0x
  1. Open Netscape.
  2. From the Communicator menu, select Messenger Mailbox.
  3. Click {New Message}.
  4. Click {Attach} and choose File....
  5. Locate your file, select it, and click {Open}.
  6. Complete the rest of the message and send it as you normally would.
