Co-ops & Internships

What is co-op and internship?

  • Work experience related to a student’s major and/or career goals.
  • Part-time internship or co-op is less than or equal to 20 hours/week, typically over a period of 10-15 weeks during an academic semester.
  • Full-time internship or co-op is equal to 21 hours/week or up to a maximum of 40 hours/week, typically over a period of 10-15 weeks during an academic semester.

Minimum Eligibility to Register a Co-op or Internship

  • Sophomore status or above.
  • 2.5 cumulative GPA for undergraduates, 3.0 for graduate students.
  • Declared course of study or acceptance into major program.
  • Completion or near completion of entry level courses outlined by your college.

How to Register

For credit or non-credit full-time or part-time co-op or internship registration

  • Consult with your college office regarding co-op/intern registration process.
  • You may need to identify and secure a faculty mentor to oversee the academic project attached to the experience.
  • Deadline for registration is the 14th day of the semester.
  • Student pays tuition or credit hour course fees similar to other academic courses.

International students

  • Meet with UCIE to determine eligibility and begin your paperwork process.
  • Consult with your college office regarding co-op/intern registration process.
  • Be prepared to provide a copy of your offer letter.
  • Deadline for students registering for a full-time co-op: registration must be processed and received in UCIE before the first Friday of the term for which you are registering;
  • UCIE reviews documents. If approved, UCIE prepares I-20, sends confirmation to site supervisor.
  • UCIE sends university Registration Activity Form to Registrar.
  • Student may not start working until all paperwork is processed, student is registered and employer has received the I-20 work authorization.

Requirements for Completion of Internship or Co-op

  • Complete duration of co-op/internship experience.
  • Adhere to organization’s policies and procedures.
  • Complete and return exit interview questionnaire.
  • If for credit, you may complete a project outlined by faculty mentor.
  • Site supervisor completes and returns performance appraisal form.

The Company's Role

  • May provide an offer letter (a requirement for international students).
  • Provide an orientation.
  • Outline company policies and procedures.
  • Provide direct supervision to the student.
  • Contact Wright State if student is terminated.
  • Complete an end of term evaluation.
