For the 26th consecutive year, a team of Wright State University students earned top awards at the National Model UN Conference in New York City. Representing France, the team won the two highest awards, Outstanding Delegation and Outstanding Position Paper. Over 3,200 students from around the world participated in the conference.
“The conference explores the processes of bargaining, negotiation and conflict resolution across a wide spectrum of issues including trade, human rights, HIV/AIDS and terrorism,” said Donna Schlagheck, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Political Science at Wright State. “The insights and enthusiasm they brought to the competition as well as what they learned about diplomacy and the human condition during the conference will make them better citizens of the world.”
“Before traveling to the conference, our team spends approximately four months researching the foreign policy of our assigned country and articulating that policy within a position paper that is then sent to the conference for evaluation prior to our arrival in New York,” said Matthew Hayes, a head delegate for the Wright State team. “Our Outstanding Position Paper was the first for a Wright State delegation representing a permanent member of the Security Council.”
“Many of our team members have remarkable opportunities following their participation in this program,” said Sarah Hackenbracht, the other head delegate for Wright State’s team. “These range from traveling and studying abroad to pursuing jobs in the public and private sectors to increased political awareness and involvement. Students who dedicate themselves to this program reap substantial rewards both personally and professionally.”
Schlagheck and Laura Luehrmann, Ph.D., associate professor of political science, accompanied the team to New York after preparing them in a seminar during the winter quarter at Wright State. Team sponsors are Wright State’s College of Liberal Arts, vice president for curriculum and instruction, and Office of Disability Services.
