General

Comparative physiology principally of decapod crustacea but also molluscs and lower vertebrates (fish and reptiles).  Gas exchange, ion and acid-base regulation in response to environmental changes including salinity, temperature, dissolved gases, exercise, and the advance from aquatic to terrestrial existence.  Regulation of biomineralization using molecular approaches.

Current Research

Molecular biology of epithelial (branchial/renal) ion motive proteins specifically Ca2+ pumps (SERCA and PMCA), Na+/Ca2+ exchanger (NCX) and Ca2+ channels (ECaC).
Temporal and spatial regulation of genes coding for Ca2+ transporting proteins.
Molecular evolution of Ca2+ transporting proteins.
Cellular and molecular biology of Ca2+ transporting proteins from epithelia of marine, freshwater and terrestrial decapods from Brazil.
