BIOLOGY 415/615 - Introduction to Toxicology

DR. WAYNE CARMICHAEL Winter 2005

Offered Again in Spring, 2006

Course Description      BIO 415/615 - 4 cr. hr. - Introduction to Toxicology

This course covers the basic principles of toxicology using toxicant examples that emphasize sources and types from the environment. Principles covered include toxicokinetics (uptake, distribution, biotransformation), measurement of toxicity, systems toxicology (liver, neuro, kidney, dermal, respiratory, carcinogenesis) and risk assessment/management.

Prerequisite:    Courses in animal physiology and organic chemistry

Method of Presentation:

The academic work will be presented in two 90-minute lecture sessions weekly.

Determination of Grades:

Final grade for the quarter will be based on a cumulative total of 275 points (225 pts. exams, 50 pts. problems). Grades will be assigned on a distribution of the 275 points. The exact distribution will be determined by the class performance as a whole.  There will be no make-up examinations given--please let me know ASAP if an exam will be/has been missed.

Drop Date:

January 21, 2005 - Last day for all students to drop a class without a grade

Projects:

For BIO 615 or BMS credit students, a review paper is required.
