Wright State University is a fully accredited, state-supported, metropolitan university that offers over 100 undergraduate degree programs, 27 Masters programs, three Ph.D. programs, one M.D. program, and one Psy.D. program. Its mission is to provide leadership and technological development fulfilling the educational, social, cultural, and economic needs of the Greater Miami Valley. Ninety-six percent of its over 15,000 currently enrolled students are Ohio residents, 68% live in the valley. WSU ranks third among public doctorate-granting institutions in research expenditures in Ohio and is nationally recognized as a leader in programs and services for people with disabilities and specialized needs. A virtual tour of the University can even be taken.
The Department of Biological Sciences participates in two doctoral programs: the Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. (BMS) and Environmental Sciences (ES) and two master's programs: our own (Biology) and Microbiology & Immunology (M&I) . There are roughly 400-500 declared undergraduate majors and 40 graduate students. The department has 20 tenured/tenure-track full-time faculty. The department has an annual operating budget of $2M and receives a comparable amount of extramural funding yearly.
Biological research facilities and resources at WSU include but not limited to:
- Center for Genomics Research facility (with microarray and real-time PCR instrumentation; automated DNA sequencer; luminescent image analyzer, etc.)
- Access to Microscopy Facilities (TEM, SEM, confocal, upright and inverted epifluorescence microscopes with digital cameras)
- A green house available for both teaching and research purposes
- A 60-acre wooded on-campus Biology Preserve
- Extensive network of regional MetroParks and wetland preserves including wetlands constructed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base.
- Laboratory for Animal Research that includes animal care and animal surgical facilities as well as protocols for antibody production
- Center for Teaching and Learning
- Center for Groundwater Research
- Institute for Environmental Quality
- Statistical Consulting Center
- Research and Sponsored Programs
- Institutional support facilites (i.e., machine shop, electronics shop, physical plant etc.)
- Two on-campus libraries (Paul Laurence Dunbar Library and Fordham Health Sciences Library) with excellent access to electronic journals and text via Ohio Link.
Plans for renovating the Biological Sciences Building are well underway. Plans include an 8000 sq. foot modular greenhouse, renovation of the existing building and possibly the construction of a new research building .
