9th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition

April 1-May 4, 2008

International Shoebox Sculpture Returns to Wright State

The idea behind the University of Hawaii’s International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibitions is simple; sculptors from around the world are invited to produce sculpture in any mode or media that they wish. The catch being, the final sculpture must fit inside an ordinary shoebox. Approximately 80 sculptures from artists in 14 countries make up this year’s Shoebox Exhibition.

The Stein Galleries will be exhibiting the Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition from April 1, 2008 through May 4, 2008. A public lecture by Ohio artist and Shoebox Sculpture participant Kate Budd will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2008 at 2:30 with a reception to follow in the Galleries from 4:00-5:30 pm.

The small size requirement forces artists to approach the challenges of shape and scale in new ways. The works on display range from the representative to the abstract, some are whimsical, others are closely tied to cultural heritage, but each tells a story about the unique artistic process of the individual sculptor. Collectively, the sculptures represent the varied artistic expressions and trends in contemporary sculpture at the beginning of this new millennium.

The 9th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition was developed and organized by the University of Hawai'i at Manoa and is made possible at Wright State University from support by the Friends of the Galleries, Wright State University College of Liberal Arts and the Ohio Arts Council.
