What is required to participate in the Federal Work-Study Program?

•  The student must meet the general eligibility requirements for federal student aid.

•  The student must have submitted the FAFSA by Wright State University's FAFSA priority deadline. Due to limited funding, students who submit a FAFSA after WSU's priority deadline date are not considered for the Federal Work-Study Program.

•  The student must have financial need.

•  The student must be enrolled at least half-time [enrolled for a minimum of six (6) registered credit hours/quarter for undergraduates; four (4) registered credit hours/quarter for graduates].

•  The student must also answer "Yes" to the question "In addition to grants, are you interested in work-study?" on their FAFSA.

Why participate in the Federal Work-Study Program?

Students are not required to participate in the Federal Work-Study Program to secure a job as a student employee. There are, however, benefits to participating in the Federal Work-Study Program. Many employers, for example, prefer to employ Federal Work-Study students, rather than those students without a Federal Work-Study award because the federal government subsidizes 75% of the student's wages for the employer.

Employment in the Federal Work-Study Program is considered wages earned by the student. The student will receive a W-2 Form for their Federal Work-Study employment and the student's wages earned in the Federal Work-Study Program must be reported to the IRS as taxable income when the student completes his/her federal income tax return.

Another benefit to participating in the Federal Work-Study Program is that, when filing the FAFSA for a future academic year, the U.S. Department of Education will exclude any wages earned in the Federal Work-Study Program from the student's total earned income. This can potentially increase the student's financial need for the upcoming academic year.

How much can a student make in a Federal Work-Study position?

On the student's Award Notice, the Office of Financial Aid will list the total amount of wages the student can earn in Federal Work-Study employment for the academic year. Career Services monitors students' wages earned in the Federal Work-Study program and will notify both the student and the student's employer(s) when the student is nearing the maximum amount of wages allowable in Federal Work-Study employment.

Students earn at least the current federal minimum hourly wage, but the amount might be higher depending on the type of work the student does and the skills required by the employer. The amount of hours a student employee can work per week are established by the Office of Career Services. Typically students work between ten (10) and twenty (20) hours/week.

How are students paid?

Generally, students are paid bi-weekly by Wright State University and payments are deposited into students' bank accounts. Federal Work-Study earnings are not applied to students fees. The wages students earn are given to the students to spend at their discretion.

Are Federal Work-Study jobs on campus or off campus?

Both. If students work on campus, they usually work for a department or organization at Wright State University. If students work off campus, the employer is usually a private nonprofit organization or a public agency. Students can contact the Office of Career Services at (937) 775-2556 for more information on current student employment opportunities.
