Dependency Appeal

The FAFSA form requires that a student meet one of the following criteria to be determined an independent student:

1. Must be twenty-four (24) years of age.
2. Working on a master's or doctorate program.

3. Married, as of the FAFSA filing date.

4. Have children who receive more than half of their support from the student.

5. Have dependents (other than children or spouse) who live with the student and receive more than half of their support form the student.

6. Both parents are deceased or the student is (or was until the age of 18) a ward/dependent of the court.
7. Be a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces.

If a student is considered an independent student they do not need to provide parental data on the FAFSA form. Wright State University will grant an appeal of dependency and change the student's status to independent when he/she is classified as dependent by the federal processing center in the following circumstances:

  • The student was previously married and is now divorced, and is not supported by the parent.
  • The student had a legal guardian/custodian, is now 18 years of age and has not returned to the parent's family unit.
  • The parent has abandoned the student. As a result, the student has been under the care of another adult and/or has supported himself/herself.
  • The student and parents have severed all contact due to circumstances that would constitute endangerment to the student. Endangerment can be physical or psychological in nature.
  • The parents whereabouts are unknown.
  • One parent in a one-parent, or both parents in a two-parent family are incarcerated.
  • The parents permanently reside outside the United States and the student does not have any contact with the parents.
  • The parents have been divorced for several years. The custodial parent is deceased and the student has no contact with non-custodial parent.

A student who does not meet any of the above criteria will be considered DEPENDENT according to federal regulations. A student may not appeal because his/her parents refuse to complete the FAFSA, or refuse to provide required documentation, or a student refuses to request the information from the parents.

WSU requires the appeal student to complete steps one through four of the Dependency Status Appeals Form, which may be acquired by meeting with a Financial Aid Advisor. The following additional documentation will be required in step two for the following circumstances.

  • Divorce Decree and Lease Agreement
  • Proof of Legal Guardianship/Custody
  • Proof of parent(s) incarceration
  • Proof of parental residency outside the United States
  • Certificate of Death

To determine your eligibility for a Dependency Appeal please contact the Office of Financial Aid to make an appointment with a Financial Aid Advisor.
