Powered Industrial Trucks
On December 1, 1999, OSHA updated its Powered Industrial Truck regulation, 29 CFR 1910.178. The standard was updated to include specific operator training requirements because approximately 40,000 accidents were occurring each year from unsafe operations. Equipment covered under this standard includes fork trucks, motorized pallet jacks, and platform lift trucks.
Wright State University employees utilizing powered industrial trucks must be trained and certified before operating a powered industrial truck. They must also be re-certified every three years after their initial certification. The Environmental Health and Safety Office provides this training, certification, and re-certification.
