What is LinkedIn?
You may have heard that the old adage “It’s not what you know but who you know,” or that the most effective way to secure a job is through networking – if so, you’ve heard right!
One online resource that exists to help you with professional networking is LinkedIn.
LinkedIn is designed to be a professional and career focused version of social media.
Armed with a professional profile that mimics a résumé, LinkedIn users can do several things, including:
- Connect with coworkers, classmates, friends, family, and make new contacts;
- Receive recommendations for the work you’ve done;
- Have your profile accessible to employers and search for job opportunities;
- Reach out to professionals in your field to network and learn more about the industry;
- Create a professional presence on the Web.

LinkedIn provides you with the opportunity to join networking groups in order to engage in discussions in your area of interest. Types of groups include:
- Alumni
- Corporate
- Professional
- Non-profit
- Other special interests

What is the “Get Connected with Career Services at Wright State” Group?
“Get Connected with Career Services at Wright State” is a group on LinkedIn for students, alumni, Wright State faculty and staff, and employers to engage in career related conversations.
“Get Connected with Career Services at Wright State” allows members to:
- Connect with students and alumni to engage in conversation regarding careers;
- Network with employers interested in recruiting WSU students and alumni and view job opportunities;
- Share resources, tips, and leads with the WSU community;
- Ask career related questions that can be answered by Career Service staff, alumni, and employers.

To join the “Get Connected with Career Services at Wright State” group, follow these instructions:
- Log in to your LinkedIn account;
- Go to the search bar on the top right hand side of the screen and choose the “Groups” option in the drop-down window;
- Type in “Get Connected with Career Services at Wright State;"
- Select “Join Group;”
- Be sure to request to receive the weekly digest so that you can stay up-to-date with current discussions about careers!
