Negotiations: Article 27, Life and Disability Insurance

Wright State University Chapter

American Association of University Professors

AAUP-WSU has proposed the article below for inclusion in the first collective bargaining agreement (CBA) for non-tenure-eligible (NTE) faculty. Our negotiating team handed it to the administration at the initial negotiating session on March 11, 2013. Reports about the status of this article will be found below the article itself.

See our CBA Negotiations page for a roster of the AAUP-WSU negotiating team, brief reports about each Monday's negotiation session, and an article-by-article summary table with links to detailed information about each individual article that either the administration or AAUP-WSU proposes to include in the CBA.

Article 27

Life and Disability Insurance

27.1 Life Insurance. For the duration of this Agreement, the University will provide, at no cost to the NTE Bargaining Unit Faculty Member, term life insurance in an amount equal to 2.44 times the NTE Bargaining Unit Faculty Member’s annual base salary for those Members with academic year appointments, and in an amount equal to 2.00 times the NTE Bargaining Unit Faculty Member’s annual base salary for those Members with fiscal year appointments, with a maximum limit of $400,000 for all academic and fiscal Members.

27.2 Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance. For the duration of this Agreement, the University will provide, at no cost to the NTE Bargaining Unit Faculty Member, accidental death and dismemberment insurance in an amount equal to 2.44 times the NTE Bargaining Unit Faculty Member’s annual base salary for those Members with academic year appointments, and in an amount equal to 2.00 times the NTE Bargaining Unit Faculty Member’s annual base salary for those Members with fiscal year appointments, with a maximum limit of $400,000 for all academic and fiscal Members.

27.3 Long Term Disability Insurance. For the duration of this Agreement, the University will provide, with no premium contribution by the NTE Bargaining Unit Faculty Member, long term disability insurance. This coverage pays a disability income benefit beginning after six months of total disability. The benefit amount is equal to 60 percent of a NTE Bargaining Unit Member’s monthly earnings (with a maximum benefit of $10,000 per month) less any income benefits payable by STRS, Social Security, or Workers’ Compensation. In addition, the plan contributes 10 percent of the Member’s usual monthly earnings to a retirement annuity during each month the Member receives group disability benefits. The value of this annuity contract is payable on a lifetime income basis when monthly disability benefits cease or when disability ends.

Status of Negotiations about the Above Article

April 22, 2013

The parties' Chief Negotiators initialed initialed -- "TA'd" -- this article, thus signifying tentative agreement on this article. Here is a pdf file showing the TA'd article.

April 1, 2013

The administration submitted a counterproposal in which it removed the "NTE" designation (as is appropriate in light of terminology to be adopted in Article 2 (Recognition)) and thus reverted to language found in the current CBA for tenure-eligible and tenured (TET) faculty.

March 18, 2013

Our team reported that we had inserted "NTE" into language from the current CBA for tenure-eligible and tenured (TET) faculty. We also noted that a recent incident revealed that the life insurance purchased by the administration actually failed to provide the proper coverage for those past age 70 (though beneficiaries have been or will be properly paid).
