Sexual Offender Information

Sex Offender Info

On July 1, 1997 a new law went into effect concerning Sex Offender Registration and Notification. Under that law, convicted sex offenders must register for a period of time with their local county sheriffs. Sex offenders are classified as 1) sexually oriented offenders, 2) habitual sex offenders, and 3) sexual predators.

The local Sheriff's office is required to notify various entities on the Wright State University campus when a sexual predator or a habitual sex offender, who the court determines is subject to community notification, moves into a specific geographical location.

Classification of Offenders:

Sexual Predator:  Is defined as a person who has been convicted of, or plead guilty to, committing a sexually oriented offense and who is likely to commit additional sexually oriented offenses.  Sexual Predators are subject to registration/address verification every 90 days for life.  All Predators are subject to community notification.

Habitual Sex Offender:  Is defined as a person who has been convicted of, or pleads guilty to, committing a sexually oriented offense, and who previously has been convicted of or plead guilty to one or more sexually oriented offenses.  Habitual Offenders are subject to registration/address verification annually for life.  A sentencing judge may determine a Habitual Offender subject to community notification.

Sexually Oriented Offender:  Is a person who has been convicted of, or plead guilty to committing a sexually oriented offense, but who has not been designated as a sexual predator or habitual sex offender.  Sexually Oriented Offenders are subject to registration/address verification annually for 10 years and are not subject to community notification.

By law all offenders must register and verify their address in person with the sheriff’s office in the county in which they reside.  Sexual Predators must register and verify their address in person with the sheriff’s office every 90 days for life. All other offenders must register and verify their address in person with the sheriff’s office annually. All offenders must report in person, any address change prior to making any residence change.
