Recruiting Standards

The Wright State University Police Department, in conjunction with the Department of Human Resources, recruits qualified individuals for the position of Police Officer I. The requirements of that position is listed below.

Education/Experience:
Must be at least 21 years of age, have the ability to gather and classify information, and be able to prepare clear and concise police reports. Must have high school diploma plus two years of directly related work experience OR Associate degree or Bachelor degree in a directly related field. Must be able to pass an entrance level written examination, physical examination, polygraph examination, psychological examination, and an extensive background investigation. May be required to undergo an annual physical examination and periodic psychological and/or psychiatric examination as directed by the department.

Certifications or Licenses Required:
Must possess a valid United States driver's license for at least one year. OPOTA Ohio Basic Peace Officer Training Certification.

Working Conditions:
Hazardous working conditions exposed to inclement weather, potential of bodily harm in criminal investigations, and other fire and public safety conditions. Will work rotating shifts, including weekends and evenings. May work outside in adverse weather conditions. Emergency response is an integral part of this position; required response to exigent circumstances during off duty hours is required. Due to the nature of police work, 40 hours per week (100% FTE) is required. Overtime may be required. Punctuality is required. Must be able to perform the physically demanding responsibilities of the position including but not limited to: regular standing, walking, or climbing several flights of stairs; sitting at an observation post, occasionally required to run, climb, crouch, or crawl, the ability to carry a firearm and other law enforcement equipment, which could be retained on the officer's duty belt.
