We
would like to offer some copyright information to those individuals and
departments sending jobs through our duplicating center.
Wright
State does not support unauthorized duplication, however the "fair
use" provision is often exercised. This provision allows very limited
reproduction and use of copyrighted materials without the copyright holders
permission and without payment of a fee.
The normal
limitation for fair use is no more than 10 percent of the book or journal.
Fair
use does not allow you to copy the same material repeatedly; it allows
one time use only.
Copyright
guidelines have also been made for audio and video recordings, computer
software, photo reproduction, and music.
Authority
figures (e.g., teachers and supervisors) shall not direct students or
employees under their supervision to perform actions in violation of copyright
law or fair use guidelines.
What
is Copyright?
Copyright
is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States (Title
17, U.S. Code) to the authors of "original works of authorship,"
including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual
works. This protection is available to both published and unpublished
works. It is illegal for anyone to violate any of the rights provided
by the copyright law to the owner of the copyright.
Policy
No. 2303 of The Wright State Policy and Procedures Manual addresses
the universitys guidelines for the reproduction of copyrighted materials.
If you have a question as to whether or not copyright exists within a
given work, please contact the Office of General Counsel, 356 University
Hall, ext. 2475. The university reserves the right to refuse requests
to copy materials in which copyright protection is undetermined.
Copyright
Service
The ClassNotes
Publications Copyright Service acquires copyright permission for copyrighted
materials being used in course packets. This permission process is arrived
at via letters to publishers, authors, or other copyright holders. We
have gone on-line with the Copyright Clearance Center and will be able
to speed up the time-consuming process of obtaining permissions. Regardless,
it is important to submit material at least eight (8) weeks before the
quarter begins, because a single request may be referred to several different
publishers before permission is granted. Also, some publishers require
an eight (8) week turnaround time. We are working to make this a more
efficient process.
ClassNotes Publications
This
account is an auxiliary function of Printing Services. The purpose of
ClassNotes Publications is to provide a reproduction, marketing, and storage
service to university faculty for text, lab manuals, and other educational
classroom materials for commercial sale. Our purpose is also to provide
students with custom-designed materials at moderate costs.
Class
packets are sold through the University Bookstore operated by Barnes and
Noble, The College Store on Colonel Glenn Hwy., and the Lake Campus Bookstore.
These packets may range in size from 20 to 600 pages, and may be stapled,
drilled, taped, bound with plastic combs, coil bound, perfect bound, and/or
shrink wrapped, with heavy weight front and back covers in the color of
your choice.
ClassNotes
Publications Purpose
- To provide a reproduction,
marketing, and storage service to university faculty for texts, lab
manuals, and other educational classroom materials
- To provide students
with custom-designed, educational classroom materials at moderate costs
Publication Procedures For Faculty
-
Initial inquiry
by author or professor relevant to general policies, e.g., authorization,
copyright information, printing specifications, manuscripts preparation,
cost, royalties (if any), inventory, distribution, etc.
-
Strict federal
copyright regulations prohibit reproduction of protected materials.
Faculty should examine their manuscripts carefully to ensure that
usage of copyright materials complies with Wright Way Policy and
Procedures No. 2303.
Copyright clearance, if necessary, will also
be obtained upon receipt of a completed acquisition form.
Acquisition of copyright permissions is often a complex and time-consuming
process; therefore, we request that you allow us adequate time before
the quarter begins to obtain required permissions. Some permissions
are granted immediately; others can take up to eight (8) weeks.
-
Manuscript submission
by author to ClassNotes Publications:
The author assumes responsibility for editorial content, manuscript
preparation (camera ready for reproduction), and copying the original
manuscript to maintain a copy for the record.
Production (typing) requirements should be discussed with us
to ensure proper preparation (e.g. typed, one-sided, large margins,
carbon ribbon).
Manuscript pages should be numbered sequentially to facilitate
accurate assembling.
Illustrations are the responsibility of the department/author
and should be line copy (sharp and clear), not continuous tone (soft
and muted).
-
The author/department
is responsible for the preparation of a Wright State University Textbook
Authorization form (indicating "ClassNotes Publications"
as the publisher) and its submission to the designated campus location.
-
The bookstore
initiates purchase orders to be forwarded to ClassNotes Publications.
-
ClassNotes Publications
processes manuscript in the production stream to the duplicating center.
-
Delivery is made
to the bookstore upon completion of product.
Important things to remember about ClassNotes
Publications:
- When placing your
textbook order with the bookstore, please indicate ClassNotes Publications
as the publisher. Also, please indicate if your order is a revised version.
- If your department
has the original manuscript, please bring or send it to Printing Services,
126 Campus Services Building, as soon as possible. A duplicating form
is not required, because the ClassNotes account pays for the reproduction.
- Upon request, a
limited number of complimentary desk copies will be provided to the
author/department at the time of publication. Additional copies may
be purchased (on an 1100 form).
University policy
prohibits the sale of packets by professors or departments and the subsequent
exchange of money within a classroom setting.
Royalties (If Any)
Since our primary function is to provide custom-designed, educational
materials at moderate costs to the student, disproportionately high royalties
are discouraged. Royalties are usually determined by the net printing
costs.
Transfer of royalties (if any) to the appropriate departmental book fund
or scholarship fund is prepared by ClassNotes Publications. (Royalties
cannot be transferred to a department or individual; royalty funds are
intended to benefit the students through support of special projects.)
Departments should contact the Office of the Controller to establish book
or scholarship funds.
Production Time
Appropriate production lead time is critical. It is the responsibility
of the author/department to submit the manuscript within an adequate time
period. Unrealistic production requirements may entail the use of overtime
hours, adding to the cost of the publication.
Manuscript Revisions/Obsolete Copies
It is the responsibility of the author/department to predict text quantities
accurately in order to minimize costly losses from obsolete volumes as
the result of manuscript revision and/or inaccurate usage projection.
Associated costs resulting from one or more of the above factors will
be prorated over the production of subsequent volumes.
Significant losses on unsold publications will be resolved with the appropriate
department.
