Karen Cathy and DanThe composition area offers a wide range of state-of-the-art electronic composition services. Some of ourservices include: typesetting, translating, and manipulating your hard copy or file copy to a camera-ready page. We have the capability of electronically scanning your color or black-and-white photographs or other artwork for placement into your document, and we also can output your file to our color printer to be used for mass color copying reproduction.

Providing Text Files

When providing text files for the composition area to manipulate and format into camera-ready art:

  • Never set text in all caps using the caps lock key.
If text is received in all caps, the composition area must reset it in upper and lower case. This is a standard of the university.
  • Do not double space after punctuation.
If text is received with double spacing, the composition area must search the document and change the spacing. This a typesetting rule and also a standard of the university.
  • Use tabs instead of spaces to align text, tables, and numbers into columns.
It is time consuming for the composition area to search and replace each varied space, and this could prove to be costly to the client.
  • Do not underline text for emphasis.
If text is received with underlining, the composition area must search and replace the underlining with italics. This is a typesetting rule and also a standard of the university.

Providing Camera-ready Art

When providing camera-ready art files for output to high-resolution hard copy or negatives:

  • Never send original files.
It is always good to have backups for emergency use.
  • Indicate the software format and version used.
This is helpful in translating files to be compatible with our software.
  • Include printer and screen fonts.
Not everyone has the same fonts. Therefore, to ensure your type prints out the same as on your computer and printer, it is essential that these be provided. If it is not possible to provide the printer and screen fonts, we may need to substitute the font with an alternative font.
  • Provide all links and graphics (example: .TIFF, .EPS, .PICT, etc.).
If the links are not provided, there is a possibility your graphic will not print.

Composition Preflight Checklist

This check sheet may be used to help prepare your files for high-resolution output to negatives. In order to prevent delays in processing your files for output, be sure to carefully examine all areas that apply.

Files

  • Be sure you have backup copies of all files.
  • Proofread files to ensure no typographical, grammatical, and/or numerical errors have been made.
  • Name each file with an original name.
  • Set the page dimensions of the document to the trimmed page size.

Proofs

  • Attach a full size (100%) proof that correctly reflects your desired final product.
  • Indicate the file contains bleeds or is of nonstandard size by including registration marks on tiled proofs.
(Note: For bleeds, a minimum of 1/8" must extend beyond the final trim.)
  • Show all colors as gray on composite proofs that are black and white.
  • Provide a color proof if the document is to be printed in more than one color.

Keep Document Clean

  • Remove all unused pages, graphic files, colors, and inks from the document and all applications used to create the file.
  • Set up files as CMYK, not RGB. Define files as spot colors if they are not process colors.

Fonts

  • Be sure to provide all printer and screen fonts used in the document.
  • Check your EPS files for fonts. Send these fonts also, or change them into paths in the original illustration program.

Links

  • Provide all links and graphics (example: .TIFF, .EPS, .PICT, etc.). If the links are not provided, there is a possibility your graphic will not print.

Important Notice:

Proofs of all composition jobs are provided for client verification and approval. Client alterations (chargeable client changes) are made when needed, and additional proofs are provided for final approval.
