Position Description:

Managing Faculty and Staff:  A key challenge impacting the success of the school will be hiring a first rate faculty and staff.  The CAO/Principal will have the majority of responsibility for building a team that is creative, enthusiastic and mission-driven.  He/she will need to establish a rewarding and professional environment for the DRSS team that will ensure the recruitment and retention of outstanding teachers.

Curriculum:  The DRSS will provide a comprehensive curriculum that is distinguished by its rigor and its substantial integration of experiential learning opportunities.  The curriculum will emphasize inquiry-based pedagogy that encourages students to explore open ended, real world problems and to work across STEM disciplines.  Initial curriculum development has begun through the work of the Dayton Regional STEM Center, which partners K-12 educations, higher education faculty and STEM industry professionals to develop curriculum modules aligned with post secondary/workforce expectations.  The start-up nature of this school and the innovative academic approach will require an experienced, creative and sophisticated leader who can skillfully present the vision of the school to the community.  The DRSS is supported by numerous community stakeholders who will have significant interest in its success.  The CAO/Principal will need to manage a broad range of political factors, as well as manage private sector and community outreach.

Fundraising:  The DRSS will receive funding based on attendance from the State of Ohio.  The CAO/Principal should expect that the school will require financial support in excess of the resources provided by the State of Ohio.  However, the school will not have access to a local tax levy for operations or a facility.  The ability to build community support and contribute to external efforts to garner resources for the school will ensure sustainability of the school.

Community Outreach:  The start-up nature of this school and the innovative academic approach will require an experienced, creative and sophisticated leader who can skillfully present the vision of the school to the community.  The DRSS is supported by numerous community stakeholders who will have significant interest in its success.  The CAO/Principal will need to manage a broad range of political factors, as well as manage private sector and community outreach.

Facility:  The DRSS design team has begun exploring options for the DRSS facility.  The CAO/Principal must work with the DRSS Design Team to identify the facility's design requirements.  He/she will have the significant responsibility for assuring that the facilities are completed in time for commencing operations of the school in Fall of 2009.
