Position Summary: The Dayton Regional Stem School (DRSS)
Principal/CAO will manage all facets of daily school operations. He/she
will ensure the safety of welfare of both students and staff and provide for a
positive learning environment. The Principal/CAO will provide
instructional leadership including curriculum planning and implementation,
instructional strategies, student accountability, and professional development.
Under the guidance of the Governing Board, the Principal/CAO develops and
implements school policies and operational guidelines.
Education and Experience:
Candidates
must have a Master's Degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
Candidates must have a degree in a
STEM disciplinary content area or have extraordinary relevant experience making
him/her uniquely qualified for the position. Candidates must hold or be eligible for a valid
Ohio Principal's License or be eligible for the Ohio Alternative Licensure
Program.
Preferred:
Terminal degree is preferred but not required
for candidates that can demonstrate extraordinary relevant experience making
him/her uniquely qualified for the job. The DRSS seeks an experienced
academic leader, committed to the values of excellence in STEM learning and
instructional innovation. The successful candidate will have demonstrated
skills as a team builder with a successful track record in dealing with varied
internal and external constituencies.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated
experience in emerging STEM disciplines and be knowledgeable of current trends,
best practices and innovations in STEM education, including national model
standards in STEM education. The successful candidate will have a strong
foundation in working with different ethnic groups, cultures and socio-economic
groups and should have successful experiences in fostering diversity as an
organizational leader. The successful candidate will have demonstrated
their ability to present information and respond effectively to interest groups,
community organizations, STEM industry professionals, school administrators and
teachers, higher education professionals, parents and other key stakeholders.
Position Description:
Managing Faculty and
Staff: A key challenge impacting the success of the school will be hiring
a first rate faculty and staff. The CAO/Principal will have the majority
of responsibility for building a team that is creative, enthusiastic and
mission-driven. He/she will need to establish a rewarding and professional
environment for the DRSS team that will ensure the recruitment and retention of
outstanding teachers.
Curriculum: The DRSS will provide a comprehensive
curriculum that is distinguished by its rigor and its substantial integration of
experiential learning opportunities. The curriculum will emphasize
inquiry-based pedagogy that encourages students to explore open ended, real
world problems and to work across STEM disciplines. Initial curriculum
development has begun through the work of the Dayton Regional STEM Center, which
partners K-12 educations, higher education faculty and STEM industry
professionals to develop curriculum modules aligned with post
secondary/workforce expectations. The start-up nature of this school and
the innovative academic approach will require an experienced, creative and
sophisticated leader who can skillfully present the vision of the school to the
community. The DRSS is supported by numerous community stakeholders who
will have significant interest in its success. The CAO/Principal will need
to manage a broad range of political factors, as well as manage private sector
and community outreach.
Fundraising: The DRSS will receive funding based on
attendance from the State of Ohio. The CAO/Principal should expect that
the school will require financial support in excess of the resources provided by
the State of Ohio. However, the school will not have access to a local tax
levy for operations or a facility. The ability to build community support
and contribute to external efforts to garner resources for the school will
ensure sustainability of the school.
Community Outreach: The start-up nature of this
school and the innovative academic approach will require an experienced,
creative and sophisticated leader who can skillfully present the vision of the
school to the community. The DRSS is supported by numerous community
stakeholders who will have significant interest in its success. The
CAO/Principal will need to manage a broad range of political factors, as well as
manage private sector and community outreach.
Facility: The DRSS design team has begun exploring
options for the DRSS facility. The CAO/Principal must work with the DRSS
Design Team to identify the facility's design requirements. He/she will
have the significant responsibility for assuring that the facilities are
completed in time for commencing operations of the school in Fall of 2009.
