Science Capital Improvements

Science Laboratory
Phase I
Two projects in Phase I of the Science Lab Capital Improvements have been completed,
construction of the Matthew O. Diggs Laboratory for Life
Science Research and the complete rehabilitation of the Brehm Laboratory building.
Brehm Lab Rehabilitation was complete for fall quarter 2007. Included in the initial phase of the science lab renovations,
this facility contains a unique teaching facility for the science teacher education program on the first floor. New
Chemistry teaching labs have been constructed in the basement and department and research facilities for the Earth and
Environmental Sciences are located on the second floor. New student lounges with natural light were also designed into the building,
continuing the focus of creation of student interaction spaces within every college. Completion of this signifies the university's
commitment to the increasing student residential population.
Phase II
Two parallel projects will were included in Phase II of the lab rehabilitation. The rehabilitation of Biological Sciences II
has created research labs for Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology (NCBP) to accommodate research funded through the recent NIH award.
The lower level houses Biology research and teaching labs. Construction in Biological Sciences II was complete February 2009. The rehabilitation
of Oelman Hall will include upgrades to the building infrastructure and creation of new general classrooms, teaching labs, an Earth and Environmental
Sciences computer lab and upgraded Chemistry research facilities. Construction in Oelman began late spring 2008. The forth floor renovations was completed
early spring 2009 which allowed most of the Chemistry research to move to the forth floor. Work could then start on the first and second floors which will
later house more Chemistry and EES research, teaching labs and 5 general classrooms. Completion of 4 first floor classrooms is scheduled for fall 2009 and
2nd floor classrooms and research is scheduled for completion December 2009.
Phase III - Biological Sciences I
The renovation of Biological Sciences I will be Phase III of the capital rehabilitation
to the science facilities. This phase begins June 13, 2009
and completes December 2009. Biological Science I building will house Biology Research and Teaching labs.
