Laser Safety
The university’s laser safety program oversees the use of laser classes IIIB and IV. These lasers can injure operators or bystanders if used improperly. Class IIIB and IV lasers require:
- administrative controls (such as operating procedures and laser warning signs),
- engineering controls (such as beam limiting devices),
- protective equipment (such as laser eyewear), and
- operator training.
All lasers, including Classes II and IIIa which are less hazardous and not controlled by the laser safety program, can damage people’s eye if abused.
- Do not look directly at the laser beam.
- Do not operate the laser at eye level.
- Do not use optics that can concentrate the laser beam energy. If this is done, inform the LSO. Laser eyewear may be required.
- Do not allow specular reflective material near the beam path.
- Do not point the laser toward anyone or the entryway.
- Do not point the laser toward specular reflective material.
If you have any questions or concerns related to the laser safety program, your safety, or potential exposure, contact the lab supervisor or the Laser Safety Officer (LSO), Dramane Konate, dramane.konate@wright.edu, 775-2169
