WSU's Licensing Program

Wright State University established a licensing program in 1989 in response to the demand and need to positively promote its image while protecting its trademark rights. In order to use the university's name or any of its marks or variations of its marks on commercial products, one must obtain permission by securing a licensing agreement.

The university licenses only those products that reflect favorably on it and that depict quality and good taste. This helps to preserve the university's good name and reputation.

Trademarks

A trademark is any mark, word, letters, or symbol associated with its owner that can be distinguished from those used by its competitors.

The university asserts ownership over its name and any other mark, logo, insignia, seal, design, symbol, or any combination of these, that has come to be associated with Wright State. Creative designs that encompass underlying university trademarks are subject to licensing as well. Examples of university trademarks are illustrated at right.

Internal Use of University's Identity Marks

Any use of the university's marks by departments or student organizations for fundraising or promotional purposes must first be approved by the Office of Communications and Marketing. All departments and student organizations are required to use a licensed manufacturer to produce the items. Promotional orders may be eligible for a royalty fee waiver; see Sally Clayton, licensing coordinator, in the Office of General Counsel for more information.

Scholarships

After expenses, royalty income from the licensing program is used for student scholarships.

Enforcement

The Office of General Counsel actively enforces the ownership of the university's marks, names, and symbols.

Retailers, distributors, manufacturers, and sales representatives are equally responsible for the purchase and resale of licensed goods.

Use of a Second Identifier

Individual units such as colleges, schools, departments, and programs may have their unit name appear below the primary or word mark as shown in the examples on the right. The artwork on the right has been customed designed so the text matches the thickness of the word mark, and includes a customized graphic bar that visually separates the primary mark from the secondary unit name. This artwork with your unit name can be obtained in Printing Services.

Institutional color standards must be adhered to for use of second identifiers. (See Primary Marks and Colors for further requirements.)

In order to maintain a clean, readable image, additional identity marks, graphics, slogans, or text are not allowed.

Second Identifiers on Internal Merchandise

Tee shirts and other merchandise are a popular use of second identifiers. The customized artwork provides a clean, consistent look for department shirts, etc.

All internal university merchandise must be printed in colors from the approved institutional and secondary color palettes on contrasting shirt or merchandise colors. (See Colors for additional information on color palettes.) Use of official colors may not be feasible in certain limited circumstances. Under these conditions, contact the Office of Communications and Marketing for assistance.

Licensed Merchandise

Please note that merchandise intended for promotional or resale purposes must go through the university licensing program. The artwork must include a registration or trademark symbol by the identity mark and be approved by the licensing coordinator. Final screen printing or embroidery must be done by an approved licensed vendor since royalty fees may be involved.
