Reference Marks

Type and placement of footnotes

  • If you use reference marks instead of superior figures, a new series of reference marks should begin on each page, as follows:

    * asterisk or star
    † dagger
    ‡ double dagger
    § section mark
    || parallels
    # number sign
  • Placement of reference marks: Place after any punctuation mark, except the dash or a closing parenthesis if the reference is made to material within the parenthesis.
  • All titles of articles, chapters, or divisions of a publication should be listed in quotation marks.
