  • When numbered or bulleted lists are composed of dependent clauses, sentence fragments, or phrases, capitalize each listing; do not use periods.

    The committee is responsible for the following projects:
    1. The orientation of new students
    2. The production of a new catalog
    3. The implementation of the new departmental requirements

    Topics Covered in the Workshop
    • Hazardous materials
    • Techniques for organizing on-scene activities
    • Hospital disaster plans
    • Past experiences of others

    Who Should Attend
    • Physicians, nurses, paramedics, and other medical personnel involved in disaster preparedness and hospital response plans
  • When items in a numbered or bulleted list complete a sentence started in the introductory sentence, each listing is lowercased and ends with a period.

    To cope with teenagers, parents have the right to:
    1. install an automatic timer that delivers a mild shock after 15 minutes of phone use.
    2. force their teenager to listen to six hours of Perry Como if their teenager's heavy metal music exceeds the government's standards for safe noise levels.
    3. use car privileges to bribe their teenager to clean his or her room.

    • employ the tools, concepts, and techniques that foster ingenuity and resourcefulness.
    • recognize, define, and handle problem situations.
  • If separating each listing with a period is not desired, use commas or semicolons before the final period.

    After careful investigation the committee was convinced that:
    1. Dr. Watson was guilty;
    2. Mr. Holmes was scatterbrained;
    3. the two friends were cohorts in crime.
  • When items in a numbered or bulleted list are complete sentences, they should be punctuated as such.

    Facts About Wright State
    1. Wright State is a relatively young, state-assisted university with more than 15,000 students.
    2. Basketball is one of seven sports the university sponsors for men.
    3. Connected by a unique tunnel system, the campus buildings are designed to be fully accessible to people with physical disabilities.
  • When items are listed within a paragraph, parentheses should enclose the numerals. The numerals do not include periods. Each listing is lowercased and separated by commas or semicolons.

    In order to pass the course, you must complete the following tasks: (1) give a 20-minute oral report on any topic, (2) interview a professional in the medical field, and (3) write a 500-page paper on medical ethics.
  • If possible, have all listings parallel, i.e., single words, fragments, or complete sentences.
