William "Bill" Watkins was born in Harlem, New York and raised in South-Central Los Angeles. A former high school teacher, he completed the Ph.D in 1986, University of Illinois at Chicago. Bill served on the College of Education and Black Studies faculties at the University of Utah before returning to the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1995. Bill is the author of The White Architects of Black Education (2001) and the lead editor of Race and Education (2001).

Today's topic is the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire).Dissected by the Equator, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), formerly called Zaire, is the third largest country on the African continent. Kwanzaa is holiday which celebrates family, community and culture. Although this holiday is celebrated from 26 December thru 1 January, our event is to educate and promote unity.We have the unique opportunity to celebrate our African and African American students who represent the harvest of our collective community commitment to academic success. Students who have or will complete the requirements for their degree by December 2009 will be recognized during this annual celebration.
