Lecture:

"Migration in the Americas"

by Dr. Maria Vidal de Haymes

There has been a tremendous increase in international migration (from south to north) within the Western Hemisphere over the last three decades.  In the Americas, the interconnected trends of globalization and migration are dramatically visible in regard to the Latino population, in particular, with the U.S. experiencing a tremendous swell of Latino immigrants, primarily from Mexico, along with others from the Caribbean, Central and South America.  Dr. Maria Vidal de Haymes, Professor of Social Work, Loyola University Chicago, Illinois, will present an overview of migratory flows in the Americas and their impact on family, community and culture.  She will draw on her own personal immigration experience, social work practice, research, and work with the Jesuit Migrant Services of Mexico.
