Reading Journal

You should keep a journal of your responses to the assigned readings; this can include any thoughts, ideas, reactions, or feelings you get from the readings.  Please check the current list of the reading journal assignments, distributed in class.

I will check journals twice during the quarter, at the beginning of the 5th week and the 10th week.  Journals are graded both on length and on content.  You may type or handwrite your journals, but please be sure I can read your work.

Journal grading:
Midterm
  • A =  15 pages (250 words = 1 page)
  • B =  10 pages
  • C =   7 pages
  • D =   5 pages
Final
  • A =  15 pages
  • B =  10 pages
  • C  =   7 pages
  • D =    5 pages

Grades will be adjusted higher or lower from these length requirements based on the quality of the content.  The content should display a critical reasoning and awareness of the topics discussed in the assigned course readings.

Journals are very difficult to grade, and grading them can often be highly subjective.  I will give every effort to grade them fairly and consistently.
