COM 102 Suggested Course Goals

Course Goals You may want to choose this goal if:
Initiating Relationships you have a desire to make new friends, find a mate, establish work relationships and/or want to learn how to strike up conversations with people you don't know.

Expressing Yourself to Others

Authentically and Responsibly

you want to share your ideas, opinions, feelings with people.

you want to show the "real" you to people.

you want to let others get to know you.

you are tired of blaming others then regretting what you've said.

Perception-Checking

you jump to conclusions often and you want to find a more effective way of finding.

you have a desire to stop and think rationally before you react/respond.

Expressing Your Emotions Appropriately

you want to learn to manage your emotions better (instead of letting them control you).

you realize you've messed up relationships in the past because you didn't handle your feelings well.

Sending Clear Messages

you want to learn how to express your thoughts and ideas more clearly to others.

you frequently feel misunderstood because you others aren't "getting" what you're saying.

Listening and Responding Skills

you want to learn to truly focus on other's and their messages.

you need to learn to understand other's messages from their point of view.

you're not sure how to respond after someone has said something to you.

Maintaining Relationships

you want to keep your long- term relationships strong (personally and professionally).

you want to increase intimacy in a relationship.

Building Supportive Communication Climates

you want to develop strong and mutually satisfying relationships with people (personally/professionally)

you want to show others that you value them.

you want people to like you and enjoy interacting with you.

you want to have influence over people.

Assertiveness

you have trouble standing up for yourself when something is wrong.

you want to learn when and how to complain effectively.

you aren't sure how to be firm without being belligerent/rude.

Conflict Management

you want to approach conflict from a healthy perspective and "fight fair".

you want to learn how to confront people appropriately and effectively so you get your needs met but you don't destroy the other person in the process.

you think the goal of conflict is to win at all costs.
