Institute Information
Wright State University is pleased to offer an exciting three-week science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) institute for eligible high school juniors and seniors residing in the state of Ohio. This rigorous and intensive residential institute, designed specifically for students interested in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) disciplines, will explore the physical and natural sciences and fields of engineering through a small number of interdisciplinary thematic units: Trigonometry, Metrics, Electricity/Renewable Energy, Engineering Principles, and more. The institute will emphasize the development of practical and critical thinking skills necessary to perform scientific inquiry, and integrated within the curriculum will be opportunities for students to strengthen basic math skills. Students will have the opportunity during the institute to work in collaborative groups to design experiments, take measurements using real scientific instruments, engage in data analysis and draw conclusions. Students will also have the opportunity to interact with scientific researchers and learn more about the various STEM career options, participate in evening Learning Communities, and earn college credits. Selected students are required to live on campus to maximize the college learning experience.
Institute Guidelines
- Interested students must submit a completed Student Application. The deadline to submit applications has been extended until May 16, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. Late applications will not be considered.
- Students who have a grade point average of 2.5 and who have a strong interest in STEM disciplines are encouraged to apply.
- Students are responsible for consulting with their high school guidance counselor to determine if and how courses completed through STEM will be given credit towards high school graduation requirements.
- Both admitted students and their parents must attend a mandatory orientation session to be held at Wright State University.
- To receive high school and / or college credit, students must attend all courses during the three-week residential institute. Students are scheduled to leave campus on Fridays after class and must return to campus on Sunday evening between the hours of 8 and 9 p.m.
Enrollment Options
The STEM Institute will provide an opportunity for Ohio high school students to earn high school and or college credit. Please review this information carefully before submitting your application.
OPTION A – course(s) are taken for college credit only.
OPTION B – course(s) are taken for high school and college credit.
Students must indicate under which option they wish to enroll. Failure to indicate an enrollment option will result in the student being considered as an Option A candidate. Once the student’s application has been accepted, the option selected cannot change.
Registration Information
- The registration fee is $627. The fee covers all course materials, room, meals, and special events/field trips.
- The balance of $552 is due upon acceptance.
Application Procedures
To apply, please submit the following:
- Completed student application. Please type or print legibly in blue or black ink.
- Autobiographical essay (100 words by and about the student).
- Recommendation Form signed by math or science instructor and school counselor.
- Copy of most recent grade report and standardized test scores.
- A $75 application fee. Please make checks payable to Wright State University.
