Ohio Summer Honors Institutes - Available Classes

Performance Theatre, July 5 – 17, 2009

Welcome to the everyday life of a working theatre company. Students will attend professional workshops on voice, stage movement, monologue preparation, and improvisation, stage combat, and make-up in the mornings. Afternoons will be dedicated to character development, acting styles, seminars, rehearsals, and performances. For this challenging institute’s culminating activity, students will write an original performance piece, audition for the roles, and perform in their original production.
Residential fee*: $500.00, includes weekend stay and activities.

Technical Theatre, July 5 – 17, 2009

Work “behind the scenes” in this unique theatre experience. Students will explore theatre design, technology, and the craftsmanship of technical theatre. They will create the “look, sound, and shape” of a theatrical production. As students work with a professional technical director, they will gain experience with hands-on techniques in development, designing, building, and lighting a theatre set. Students will also visit, explore and experience a variety of professional theatres to understand an array of theatre techniques, equipment and technology used to create the total theatre experience.
Residential fee*: $500.00, includes weekend stay and activities.

Writer’s Palette, July 5 – 10, 2009

In this unique writing experience students will explore writing through a variety of media. Students will have the opportunity to explore their own creative process through art, writing, and spoken expression in this Summer Honors Institute course. Students will learn to express themselves as they investigate the creative method by participating in developing characters, creating dialogue, competing in poetry slams, and performing readers’ theatre scripts. Students will also examine a variety of effective writing techniques and writing styles. The final compilation of student work will be published in the course anthology.

Anatomy and Physiology, July 19 – 24, 2009

An interactive experience will allow students a hands-on Anatomy and Physiology experience that provides a great opportunity for students to further their understanding of the human body. Students will be presented with an in-depth overview of the structure and function of the major organ systems of the body by examination of preserved organs and completing functional tests and exams. Students will encounter a university laboratory setting, a human cadaver, and measure body functions via Spirometry and EKG tests, while exploring career opportunities in medical fields.

Forensic Science, July 19 – 24, 2009

This course will cover the fundamental processes of forensic investigation and crime scene analysis, just as crime scene investigators do, using biology, chemistry, geology, and computer science skills. Students will test the strengths and weaknesses of regularly used forensic techniques – response and evidence collection guidelines, fingerprinting, and DNA profiling, -- as they complete hands-on crime scene analysis. Students will also see how these forensic techniques are applied to numerous high-profile real world cases. 
Residential fee*: $200.00

*Residential fee covers room and board expenses.
