(STEM) Academy II

ACADEMY INFORMATION

Wright State University and Sinclair Community College, with funding from the Ohio Board of Regents, is pleased to offer an exciting two-week residential science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) academy II for Ohio rising high school juniors and seniors (as of fall 2013).

  • This rigorous and intensive two-week residential experience, designed specifically for students interested in the STEM disciplines, will explore both physical and natural sciences and engineering through interdisciplinary thematic units. 
  • Anticipated course work includes principles of biology, chemistry, engineering and physics with mathematics throughout the academy.  
  • The academy will focus on the development of practical and critical thinking skills necessary to perform scientific inquiry with particular emphasis on mathematics as an underlying foundation for the STEM disciplines.  Students will work in collaborative groups to design and conduct experiments, perform data analysis, and make conclusions based on those findings.  Students will also interact with faculty as well as with members of the Dayton research community to learn more about the various STEM careers.
  • Summer Academy II dates: July 7- July 19, 2013. 

Through the interdisciplinary curriculum provided by the faculty, students may earn up to four college credits for College Algebra (a transfer module course) upon successful completion of the academy.  Students must earn a score of 70% or higher on a math proficiency exam to receive college credit.

ACADEMY GUIDELINES

  • Students must be a junior or senior as of fall 2013.
  • Students must submit a completed Student Application.
  • Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.
  • Students should have completed Algebra II with a B or better.
  • To receive college credit, students must attend all courses during the two-week residential academy and pass the College Algebra proficiency exam with a score of 70% or higher.
  • Students will receive a stipend for their participation in the summer academy.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

         To apply, please complete the following:

  • Submit a completed Student Application along with an official copy of your high school transcript, and copies of standardized test scores.
  • Submit an autobiographical essay (250 words maximum).
  • Submit completed Recommendation Form signed by math instructor, science instructor or school counselor.
  • Obtain parent or legal guardian’s signature authorizing your application.
  • Keep a copy of all application materials for your records.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Tuition is free for qualifying students.  The academy will provide all course materials, room, meals, and special planned events free of charge.  Funding for the Dayton Regional Summer STEM Academy is provided by the Ohio Board of Regents.
  • During the summer Academy, students will reside on the campus of Wright State University.  Students are scheduled to leave campus on Fridays after class and must return to campus on Sunday evening.  Return time to campus is to be announced.
