Program Dates:

June 12 – August 18, 2006.

Program:

This is a ten week summer program of research in physics that will be hosted by WSU with research being done at WSU, AFIT, and AFRL in Dayton, Ohio.  Each student will be mentored by a faculty member at WSU or AFIT or a research scientist at AFRL on a project that focuses on experimental or computational aspects of basic and/or applied research.  Areas of research include atomic, molecular and optical physics, chemical physics, plasma physics, solid state physics, materials science, and biological physics.  There will be several workshops/tutorials that will compliment both the research projects and the backgrounds of the participants.  These workshops/tutorials may include computational techniques using mathematical software programs such as Mathametica or MatLab, experimental and laboratory techniques, preparing for the GRE and preparing presentations and posters.  There will also be a series of seminars that explore the different fields of research and discuss the educational and career opportunities available in the physical sciences.  There will also be tours of area laboratories and facilities, poster and research presentations by the participants and several social activities.

Eligibility:

The WSU REU program is intended for undergraduate students considering the possibility of graduate study in physics or related fields in the physical sciences or engineering.  Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in physics, engineering physics, or closely related field with an interest and background in physics.  Members of groups under-represented in physics (women, members of underrepresented minorities, and those with disabilities) and students from two-year colleges or universities that do not have undergraduate research opportunities are particularly encouraged to apply.  The program is open only to US Citizens or permanent residents.

Housing and Stipends:

Participants will receive $4000 for the 10-week program ($400/week) be given housing in campus residence hall, free of charge, and an allowance of $560 for meals and $400 for travel.
