Now in its 4th year, the Wright State University Low Brass Festival has grown into a recurring solo competition and festival. The purpose of the event is to promote low brass instruments in southern Ohio through performances and master classes. High school students, college students, amateurs, & professionals are welcome to attend! The competition is open to high school & and college students and will be held on Friday, December 7th.  Click the Miami Valley Low Brass Solo Competition link above for more information!  The Low Brass Festival is held on Saturday, December 8th and will feature the following:

  • Master Classes and performances by hosts Dr. Gretchen McNamara & Mr. Tom Lukowicz
  • Master Classes and performances by guest artists from the United States Air Force Band of Flight from Wright Patterson Air Force Base
  • Ensemble Experience in the Festival Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, Trombone Choir and Low Brass Ensemble
  • Performances by the winners of the Miami Valley Low Brass Solo Competition
  • Vendors will be on site with instruments to try, and music and supplies to purchase
  • Cost of the event is $35 This covers competition entry, all master classes, recitals, and events of the day. Also included is a catered lunch and t-shirt
  • Everyone should bring an instrument and participate in the clinics and workshops.
  • All festival events will take place on the campus of Wright State University at the Creative Arts Center.

Andrew Duncan is a trombonist in the United States Air Force Band of Flight, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Cum Laude from West Virginia Wesleyan College and a Master of Music in Trombone Performance from Carnegie Mellon University (where he was awarded a Graduate Fellowship and Graduate Assistantship). While at Carnegie Mellon, he studied with Murray Crewe and Peter Sullivan of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Duncan's professional performing experience includes the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Dayton Bach Society, Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Northwest Indiana Symphony. He made his solo debut with the Band of Flight in February 2010. He has also performed as soloist with renowned conductors Sir Andrew Davis and Erich Kunzel, given the United States premiere of Chris Brubeck's Second Concerto for Bass Trombone, and recorded the world premiere of Marilyn Taft Thomas' "Seasons Within", featuring former Metropolitan Opera tenor Douglas Ahlstedt. As a commercial musician, Mr. Duncan was the lead trombone for the Disney All-American College Band and has performed with luminaries such as Wayne Bergeron, Bobby Shew, Jiggs Whigham, Alex Iles, Marcus Printup, and many other industry leaders.

Active on the podium, Mr. Duncan has conducted groups such as the Air Force Band of Flight, the Wright State University Chorus and Faculty Orchestra, and the West Virginia Wesleyan College Wind Ensemble. He has been a guest clinician at the University of California, Los Angeles, Wright State University, and numerous high schools throughout western Pennsylvania and Ohio. Mr. Duncan is also an adjudicator for the United States Scholastic Band Association, and is an active arranger for professional and high school groups throughout the Miami Valley.

Andrew's professional affiliations include the American Federation of Musicians Local No. 1, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, and the International Trombone Association.

Staff Sergeant John R. Hardisky is the Principal Tubist of the United States Air Force Band of Flight, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. Sergeant Hardisky was born in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania and grew up in Luzerne, Pennsylvania where he began studying tuba in the fifth grade. After graduation from Wyoming Valley West High School in 1998, John completed a BM in Music Performance at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA in 2002. He also pursued graduate studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, and has nearly completed an MM in Music Performance at Wright State University, Dayton, OH. His teachers have included Abe Torchinsky, Jay Krush, Daniel Perantoni, Michael Thornton, Tony Kniffen, Benjamin Miles, and David Saltzman.

Sergeant Hardisky's professional credits include substitute tubist with the Cincinnati Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony, Columbus Symphony (OH), Toledo Symphony, Kentucky Symphony, and Principal Tubist with the Layfayette (IN) Symphony. He was also an adjunct faculty member at Miami University of Ohio in 2006. He has been a featured soloist over 50 times with the Band of Flight in 7 states, as well as at The US Army Band Tuba and Euphonium conference in 2005, and the Northeast Regional Tuba and Euphonium Conference in 2007.
