The Wright State University Double Reed Festival is an event that brings together double reed players from throughout Southwestern and Central Ohio. The conference is a full day of new ideas and exchanges of knowledge geared towards the needs and interests of high school students, private studio teachers, and amateur double reed players. The day will include:
- Classes covering concepts of performing, reed adjustment, the English horn and contrabassoon, and literature with separate offerings for students and adults.
- The WSU Double Reed Festival is for high school and college students, amateur and professional players,
and private studio teachers
- Cost of the event is $30 This covers all masterclasses, recitals, and events of the day.
- Everyone should bring an instrument and participate in the clinics and workshops.
- All festival events will take place on the campus of Wright State University at the
Creative Arts Center.

Peter Simpson has taught at the University of Kentucky since 1976 and has been Principal Bassoon with the Lexington Philharmonic since 1978. He studied at the University of Rhode Island, University of New Hampshire, and the Hochschule Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. An active chamber musician, Peter has played in much of the US, including recitals at annual conferences of the International Double Reed Society, National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and Music Educators National Conference. Peter has also performed with the Louisville Orchestra, New Hampshire Music Festival, Goldovsky Opera Institute, Lakeside Symphony, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Ventura Symphony, Victoria Bach Festival, and the Des Moines Metro Opera. Peter’s former students hold positions with the Los Angeles Ballet Orchestra, Austin Symphony, and Cincinnati Symphony, and have performed with the Philadelphia and Houston symphony orchestras. He has published many arrangements for small woodwind ensembles, including two volumes of bassoon orchestral excerpts in duet form, and is the author of “Musical Gestures: exercises in expression”. |

Danna Sundet is professor of oboe at Kent State University and co artistic coordinator of the Kent Blossom Music Festival. She serves as director of the John Mack Oboe Camp, and is principal oboe of the Erie Philharmonic. Ms. Sundet is regarded as one of Ohio’s most influential teachers of young oboe students. She has performed at the Cayman Islands Arts Festival, the Carmel, Ca. Bach Festival, Baldwin Wallace Bach Festival, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Houston Symphony and with orchestras and chamber ensembles in Mexico, Norway and Brazil. She records for Ludwig Masters, Worldview International, Ancient Paths, Panoramico's and her latest chamber music CD will be released in 2013 with Kent/Blossom Music. |

John deGruchy is a native of Long Island, N.Y., where he began studying the bassoon at age 15. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied under Cleveland Orchestra principal bassoonist George Goslee. He has also earned a Masters of Music from Rice University, studying under the tutelage of Benjamin Kamins.
John served as Second Bassoon in the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra from 1988-1996. He has also performed extensively throughout southwest Ohio and the Midwest, including stints with the Cincinnati Opera and Ballet, The Louisville Symphony, The West Virginia Symphony, and the Whitewater Opera Company. He has also participated in the Grand Teton Music Festival, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute.
Most recently, John has performed as principal bassoon with the Springfield Symphony in 2003 and 2004, the Middletown Symphony 2006 and 2007, and also the Hamilton – Fairfield Symphony 2007-2009. He also has performed at the Hamilton Fairfield Chamber Series and the Dayton Art Institute Sunday Chamber Music series in 2010. He and his wife Katherine founded the Burning River Winds in 2006. |

Carlos Coelho is an oboe repair specialist and owner of Carlos Coelho Woodwinds. Born in Brazil, he studied at the Manhattan School of Music and at Temple University. His masterclass will be on selecting the right instrument. Coelho Woodwinds will have a booth in the vendor hall so oboists can purchase supplies and speak to Carlos throughout the day. |

Bruce Gbur is the former professor of bassoon and oboe at Kansas State University holding degrees in bassoon performance and musicology from Baldwin-Wallace and the University of Georgia. He is an accomplished contrabassoonist and is the founder and owner of the double reed publishing house Prairie Dawg Press. Dr. Matthew Morris, bassoonist: Currently Instructor of Bassoon/Music Theory at Ohio University, Matthew Morris holds Degrees from Florida State University, Baylor University and East Carolina University respectively and has held teaching positions at The University of Virginia, Valdosta State University and Baylor University. His Principle teachers were Jon Pederson; Principle Bassoon, The North Carolina Symphony, Brian Kershner; Baylor University, and William Winstead; Florida State University. Dr. Morris has appeared in numerous festivals, concert series, radio and television broadcasts, studio and commercial recordings, Chamber music series and orchestral performances in the United States and abroad, including appearances at Carnegie Hall, the Bolshoi Theater, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C., and seven IDRS world premieres. He has presented Master Classes, conducted workshops, and served as an adjudicator on the junior high, senior high and college levels. In addition to his activities as a teacher and performer, Dr. Morris has created a number of arrangements for double reeds, saxophones and has served as producer and editor for Compact Disc Recordings. |
