One of the most important features of the Honors Institute is the requirement that students participate in a service learning project connected to the topic for the year.

The service learning component provides concrete community situations that call upon students to reflectively test and synthesize the ideas they learn in the classroom. A total of 31 students were enrolled in one of two seminars related to the human brain:

Madness and Civilization
and
The Brain, the Mind, and the Soul.

This year, students collaborated with Partners for Community Living, an organization devoted to integrating people with developmental disabilities into the community.

In small groups of three or four, students engaged in service learning with the purpose of reflectively testing and synthesizing the ideas they learned in the classroom. In total, nine projects were completed.
