"I grew up wanting to be Captain Nemo from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."

Best known for his 1985 discovery of the Titanic, deep-sea explorer Dr. Robert Ballard has succeeded in tracking down numerous other significant shipwrecks, including the German battleship Bismarck, the lost fleet of Guadalcanal, the U.S. aircraft carrier Yorktown (sunk in the World War II Battle of Midway), and John F. Kennedy's boat, PT 109. In addition to being a National Geographic Society explorer in residence and a commissioner on the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy, Ballard is the founder and president of the Institute for Exploration at Mystic Marinelife Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut.

Science Writer for the New York Times

Ms. Cornelia Dean is a science writer for the New York Times, where she writes mostly about environmental issues and science policy, and a lecturer in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University.

From 1997 to 2003, Ms. Dean was science editor of the Times, where she was responsible for coverage of science, health, and medical news in the daily paper and in the weekly Science Times section. She spent the 2003-04 academic year at Harvard, where she was a fellow at the Kennedy School of Government and taught in the Harvard College program on Environmental Science and Public Policy.
