Summer 2009 Workshop Offerings

Welcome to the Center for Economic Education’s summer 2009 workshop offerings.  Each of the workshops in this listing can be taken for graduate credit by-way-of an independent project.  The project and number of credit hours available varies by topic - call for more details.  Graduate Credit is offered at a discounted rate of $133 per hour (normal price per hour is $322)

Educators in Industry

Educators in Industry is a  4-day summer workshop to help participants become more acquainted with business and industry, build new partnerships and find ways to make learning real for students of all ages.  Participants will spend the week touring local companies and meeting community leaders.  If you like workshops that keep you out of your seat – this one is for you.  Participants will walk away with robust information about specific businesses, types of jobs that may available for their students in the future, and a concrete outlook on the economy.  Come as you are – no prerequisites required.  You may take this 4 day course for three graduate credit hours for $399 or you may receive a certificate of contact hours ($50).

Visits from past years have included Mike-Sells Potato Chips, WDTN Channel 2, Pepsi Bottling, ABF Freight, and many other interesting businesses.


Dates: June 16 - 19, 2009
Time:  8:30 - 4:00 p.m. each day
Location:  Wright State University & various businesses in the community
Grade Level Recommendation:  All


Games-to-Go

Spend the day creating activities, puzzles and games, leaving with classroom ready materials.  The activities reinforce concepts pertaining to the ODE’s citizenship, math and reading/language outcomes and are geared for grades K-6.  Supplies and materials are provided.  Please indicate your activity choice when registering.  There is a $25 registration and materials fee due at the time of registration.  This fee is non-refundable and  is not waived when taking graduate credit.  Please note:  participants are “on their own” for lunch and refreshments and lamination will not be provided.

Personal Finance Teachers Academy (2 offerings)**

In  2010 personal finance education will be mandated for all Ohio high school students. Get ahead of the curve by participating in this 2-day workshop that will introduce teachers to personal finance topics like decision making, the value of education, the value of money, credit– how to get it and how to manage it, investing and providing financial protection for yourself. This workshop is a joint effort between the Centers for Economic Education in Ohio, the State Treasurer, and the Ohio Department of Education.  You will leave this workshop with new and interesting ways to introduce personal finance topics into your classroom.  And you might learn something that you can use personally too! There is a $50 workshop fee due at the time of registration. 

A FREE RESOURCE KIT WILL BE PROVIDED.

Special Topics:  CREDIT - Personal Financial Literacy

Through the success of our Teacher Academy and Personal Financial Literacy training, teachers have been introduced to a breadth of information as mandated by Ohio Senate Bill 311. Our special topic series will go beyond evaluating the breadth of the material and begin to help teachers develop a better depth of understanding of each of the content areas.  In this special topics course/workshop, we’ll explore the three C’s of credit, credit as a necessity, credit reports, understanding credit legislation and a host of other credit related topics that will make you extremely prepared to teach personal financial literacy in the classroom. This course can be taken for one graduate quarter credit hour for $133 or as a workshop for $50.
