| The BioMedical Imaging Laboratory (BMIL) is jointly supported by
Wright State
University and Miami Valley Hospital.
On the university side, the School of Medicine
and the College of Engineering and
Computer Science jointly share in the responsibilities for the BMIL.
The BMIL was established in 1986 under the leadership of its current director, Thomas N. Hangartner, Ph.D. Starting out as a research laboratory with an interest in the development of new methods designed to non-invasively measure bone density, the laboratory soon got involved in the clinical application of the newly developed methods. This has been taking place through laboratory-initiated research projects and through participation in clinical trials to test new drugs for osteoporosis and related diseases. Some of the bone-measurement methods available at the laboratory (peripheral quantitative computed tomography and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry) are also being used on a routine clinical basis for patients referred to the laboratory by area physicians for osteoporosis evaluation.
