Year 1 Interdisciplinary Training
Core curriculum courses
Students will receive interdisciplinary training tailored to fit
requirements for each of the program’s areas of concentration.
Courses will include a survey course specific for each area of
concentration and four of the following courses (dependent upon
the particular area of concentration).
Molecular Biochemistry I
Molecular Biochemistry II
Cell Biology
Human Physiology
Intercellular Communication
Research Preparation
A substantial part of year one is devoted to aiding students in
the selection of a mentor. This is facilitated by the following
first year courses:
Introduction to Research (4 credit hours, Fall)
Two laboratory rotations (12-14 credit hours, Spring)
Advanced Courses (variable credit hours)
Year 2 (all concentrations)
Perform required teaching duties
Advanced curriculum courses
Non-dissertation research
Form supervisory committee and obtain Program approval
Complete preliminary exams
Years 3, 4 and 5
Write dissertation proposal and obtain supervisory committee
approval
Dissertation research
Have two (2) committee meetings yearly
Year 5
Obtain permission to write dissertation
Write, present and defend dissertation
Apply for graduation (Graduate Studies Office). Check well in
advance for deadline dates.
