Prerequisites for Admission
Applicants should have:
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution
- An undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0
on a 4.0 scale
- For international students without a degree from an accredited
US academic institution, a TOEFL score minimum of 250
computer or 100 internet is required. Note: this is
higher than required by the School of Graduate Studies.
- Graduate record exam scores (general test)
Course prerequisites:
- One year of mathematics, including introductory calculus
- One year of physics
- One year of biology
- Two years of chemistry, including an organic chemistry sequence
Exceptions to these prerequisites may be made for
Applicants planning to join the Structural and Quantitative
Area of Concentration who are pursuing computer-intensive
or chemistry-intensive areas of research focus. In these instances,
prerequisites normally are:
For computer-intensive areas of research focus
- One year of mathematics, including introductory calculus
- One year of physics
- Two years of chemistry including an organic chemistry sequence
- A computer language course or demonstrated programming expertise
For chemistry–intensive areas of research focus
- One year of mathematics, including introductory calculus
- One year of physics
- One year of biology OR two or more quarters of biochemistry
- Two years of chemistry including an organic chemistry sequence
- One year of physical chemistry
All prospective students must submit one official (not a copy)
transcript from each institution attended. Under special circumstances,
deficiencies in prerequisites may be waived or corrective measures
may be arranged by action of the Admissions Committee.
Waiver of Program Requirements
Students may petition
for exemption from all or part of the core curriculum (Year One). Petitions may also be submitted for waiver of credit
for previous graduate courses taken in another accredited program.
Course credit of up to 12 hours may be waived providing: (1) the
grade attained in each course is a B or above; (2) the course was
taken by the student within five years of the actual waiver; and
(3) the course relates to the area of concentration chosen in this
program. Petitions for obtaining credit for laboratory experiences
may be made, subject to the same credit-hour limitations and time
constraints as for courses.
