Introduction
Thank you
for your interest in Wright State Army ROTC! I am LTC Chuck Arneson, the
Admission and Scholarship Officer for the Military Science Department at Wright
State University. As you know Army ROTC is a unique and special program that
allows qualified college students to earn a commission as an US Army Officer
while completing their college degree. You take an Army ROTC class just like any
other college class, it’s that simple. You don’t sign a contract, enlist, or
join the military; you take an AROTC course to earn college credit for most
degree programs. However there are misconceptions about the AROTC program, the
most common ones are: 1) “enlisting” - you aren't enlisting or join the US Army
(that would occur at the time of your commission and graduation), normally there
isn't any obligation until you start your junior year, and 2) “Boot Camp” - you
don't go to Army Basic Training or "Boot Camp", in fact over 85% of the training
is done on campus during the school year. The first two years of the program is
called the Basic Course, and anyone can take AROTC these classes. To
continue in the program, which is called the Advanced Course, you must
qualify based on academics, being physically fit, medically qualified, high
moral and ethic character, a strong desire to earn your commission, and
demonstrated leadership potential.
If you
believe you are academically competitive, want to achieve your mental and
physical potential, and possess a desire to serve your country as a US Army
Officer take a Military Science class this quarter. As an example, an incoming
freshman attending the Summer On-Campus Advising and Registration (SOAR) the
best plan is to register for the freshmen Military Science course, MIL 111,
Introduction to Military Science I. By taking the military science
class and participating more fully in the other leadership development training
we offer you an opportunity to prove yourself and pre-qualify for a possible
on-campus scholarship that pays for tuition and fees, a $900 book allowance, and
a $300 to $500 tax-free monthly stipend during the school year. Moreover, we
have campus based three and two year scholarships for college freshmen and
sophomore students that take the challenge and demonstrate they have
scholar, athlete, and leader potential.
I would
recommend you call me to discuss your personal situation and needs over the
phone and/or schedule an appointment on campus in my office. My work phone
number is 937-775-3841 or you can reach me through my cell phone at (937)
416-3488. This way we can answer your questions directly, and if you are
interested in the Advanced Course, ensure you are qualified to earn a
commission. We know everyone’s situation and needs are unique therefore when we
sit down to talk with you we listen and help you design a program that best fits
your schedule and lifestyle. Our pledge to you is always be available to discuss
your individual situation and understand your needs and goals to determine if
our prestigious leadership development program is right for you. Thanks for you
interest, now let Army ROTC help you achieve your mental and physical best by
taking the next step of visiting our department at 328 Fawcett Hall and talking
to an instructor!
