General Education Conversion Committee:
GE Transition Reading Room
Charge to General Education Semesters Conversion Committee:
The General Education Conversion Committee will propose an innovative General Education (GE) Program, based on national best practices, that prepares students well for the 21st century global world. The GE Program must also satisfy the requirements of the Ohio Transfer Module, which requires 36-40 semester hours of general education drawn from courses in the following disciplinary areas: English, mathematics, arts/humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and natural and physical sciences.
The new semesters GE Program, in its totality, should represent approximately the same percentage of the total number of credit hours of the baccalaureate degree as is currently the case (approximately 30%) under the quarter system.
Within the context of the above, the GE Conversion Committee should design a GE Program that:
- Identifies appropriate student learning outcomes that will prepare students well for success in the 21 st century global community; these learning outcomes should also address the guidelines and student learning objectives of the Ohio Transfer module, including ease of articulation with partner institutions;
- Responds to the Wright State University Strategic Plan, particularly Strategic Goal #1, which states that we will "Enhance our distinctive learning experience to produce talented graduates with the knowledge and skills essential for critical thinking, meaningful civic engagement, international competency, an appreciation for the arts, life-long learning and the ability to lead and adapt in a rapidly changing world";
- Satisfies general education accreditation requirements for all programs throughout the University;
- Offers opportunities for students to engage in experiential learning in GE (study abroad, service learning, internships, undergraduate research, etc.);
- Integrates appropriately and seamlessly with the First Year Experience at Wright State, and serves as a strong foundation for the baccalaureate experience in general;
- Provides a GE transition plan for continuing students;
- Provides a GE assessment plan that will annually measure, using direct and indirect methods, the achievement of student learning outcomes and, based upon assessment findings, make recommendations for continuous improvements.
In carrying out its work, the GE Conversion Committee should seek broad and regular input from University constituents. The proposed program, including the Transfer Module and GE assessment plan, will be reviewed and approved by the Undergraduate Curriculum and Academic Policies Committee (UCAPC) of the Faculty Senate. The Committee should plan to present its recommendations to UCAPC by November 2009. This timeline will permit the University to remain on schedule with its Semesters Transition Milestone Timeline which calls for the approval of the GE Curriculum by February 2010.
