Academic Program Review

Introduction

Program review provides an opportunity for the institution to use a data driven process to review academic programs and to reflect on what the faculty would like to achieve in the next year.

Program Reviews consist of four stages: a plan, a review process, a report where action items for the year are expressed, and a follow-up on actions taken as a result of the review. The program review process also provides an opportunity to document progress towards achieving assurance of learning. Assurance of Learning helps the institution answer the question “How do we know our students are learning?”  The University Assurance of Learning Committee oversees the Program Review Process.

Program reviews are evidence-based using data to inform and validate achievements as well as identify areas for improvement and growth. They serve as a reminder to ensure course syllabi are current, the assessment of learning outcomes is conducted and results used to increase course quality, the program continues to meet the needs of any professional accreditation, and areas of concern about the program are identified.

Finally, program reviews meet the requirements and expectations of the Ohio Board of Regents (OBR) and the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).

Overview of the Process

Wright State’s program reviews are prepared according to the information presented on this website. Program review is cyclical: the program review is conducted using current data and a plan of action is developed. The program committee works on the plan and improvements and provides a report of the actions taken and the results.

In the program action plan, the program data is validated and documented along with recognition of those who will participate in the process. Each College designates a faculty member and the Assessment Coordinator to lead on the process. These team members also represent the college on the Assurance of Learning Committee.

In the next step, the program review report is written. Attention is placed on data and information relevant to the current status and future of the program or administrative unit and includes how the unit supports Wright State’s strategic plan. The overall process is guided by the Assurance of Learning Committee following a timetable and approach to be used by all areas doing program review.

Program Review History

Wright State established a periodic program review in 2006 which was overseen by the Faculty Senate Undergraduate Curriculum and Policies Committee.   This program consisted of seven year cycle that reviewed all undergraduate programs either through disciplinary accreditation or through an extensive internal process. 

The transition of the university from the quarter to the semester academic calendar provided an opportunity to revisit the periodic program review process and align it with the development of the university strategic plan on a five year basis.   The current program review begins following the completion of the University Strategic Plan.   The first year reviews all academic programs that reside within academic departments for alignment with the new strategic plan, as well as curricular currency, program assessment processes, and sustainability.  The second review consists of multi-disciplinary and co-curricular programs.
