More information will be sent out to the campus community. Phil Neff reviewed the security improvements and related activities that have been performed by CaTS in the last six months. This includes implementation of server security zones for all CaTS servers, additional hardware and software implementation to protect the network perimeter, strengthened implementations of software offerings. Larry Fox Network Security: A) CaTS is requiring that all clients have updated patches, virus checking, spyware detector/remover installed on their machines. CaTS will have applications available for Windows/Mac clients through the ConnectWright CD. The new CDs are in and will be given to all incoming freshman and resnet students. The CD will also be available at the CaTS Help Desk for everyone else.
Tasks completed: 1. The announcement for students, faculty and staff about the compliance requirement has been posted on the ConnectWright CD, the access.wright.edu authentication page and in a flyer that went out from the Admissions for incoming freshman.
2. CaTS will be publishing the compliance initiative and minimum security standards for networked devices in future QuickBits, the Student Handbook, CaTS Web, and WINGS.
3. CaTS has completed the investigation of applications that will check for compliance. The product we've chosen to evaluate is Clean Access from Cisco.
CaTS staff will work with everyone to ensure their machines are compliant. Exceptions will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
Novell Updates: CaTS will soon begin implementing auto updates for their Windows Novell clients at Wright State University. Macintosh users will NOT be affected by this new process even if they are using Novell. Novell provides user access to network resources such as the department’s shared folder, home directory folder, as well as network delivered applications. In the past, CaTS has manually updated the client software by visiting each department. The new automatic process will deliver updates more efficiently and better serve the faculty and staff. What you will see if the Novell client software requires an update: If the Novell client software on your Windows PC requires an update, a message will appear on your computer screen indicating that an update is in process. This will happen as soon as you login. After the update is complete you will be notified that the update was successful and your computer will reboot. (Please allow the update to complete without interruption.) This only applies to Windows PCs using the Novell client.
In order to reduce the chance of problems arising from an update, CaTS will test Novell client updates before they are deployed to the campus community. However, if you experience problems during or after an update please call the CaTS Help Desk at775-4827.
In response to a question from Jim Vance, Paul Hernandez confirmed that CaTS will provide software support for non-supported computers at no charge provided the task at hand takes no longer than would be required on a supported computer. He also agreed that CaTS would amend its official “Non-Supported Product Declaration” form to indicate that a unit purchasing a non-supported product is responsible for all *hardware* support of the product.
The next scheduled UTC meeting will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2005 from 3:00 – 4:00 pm in 315 Library.
