Approval of Minutes
Minutes of the September meeting were approved as written.
CaTS Updates
Larry Fox:
- Campus Wireless-Residence Halls were completed in September. There are 2, 850 residential students and, of those, approximately 600 students are using wireless access. A total of 2,750 students are using wired and/or wireless access.
- At the Provost's request, CaTS is in the process of investigating the possibility of making the entire main campus wireless. The number of locations and costs will be reported by the end of January 2005.
- CaTS is also reviewing the possibility of making standardized authentication across campus.
Phil Neff:
- Security - All university servers will be moving to different security zones as there are different degrees of security for different types of services. CaTS servers will be switched over during winter break.
- Update on ERP - Banner training and testing is on schedule. Financial applications will go live by July 2005. Document imaging is now in test mode.
CTL Updates
Dan DeStephen:
- Dan gave an update on fall quarter's use of WebCT. There are approximately 10,000 students enrolled this quarter.
- Once of the results of the study by the Classrooms of the Future Committee was the need to continue to convert general classrooms to electronic classrooms. The Provost has committed to fund the conversion of 30 additional classrooms over the next 3 years. Dan distributed a draft Electronic Classroom Conversion Plan.
- Dan announced the completion and distribution to faculty of the "Faculty Quick Reference Guide" which lists the services provided by CaTS, Univeristy Libraries, and CTL. Additional copies can be obtained by contacting any one of these departments.
- The Ohio Board of Regents has announced its official definition of "distance learning" for use by the university when reporting on distance learning courses. This definition is as follows: "Distance Learning is broadly described as the process of extending the majority of learning (70% or greater) or delivering instructional resource-sharing opportunities to locations away from the classroom site using video, audio, computer, multimedia communications or some combination of these with other traditional delivery methods." As WSU has developed a slightly different definition, the subject is still under discussion by CTL and WSU administration.
Announcements
Jeff Vernooy announced the development of a new software program that will take a standard web page and change it to a text-only page for disability students. However, at this time, it will not work with the Microsoft Office suite of products. Jeff will send out more information on this program in the near future.
A suggestion was made by Bonnie Mathies to invite the Chair of the Faculty Information Technology Committee to attend future UTC meetings.
The next scheduled UTC meeting will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2004 from 3:00 - 4:00pm in 315 Library.
