I. Approval of Minutes for November

Minutes of the January meeting were approved as written.

II. Faculty Computer Initiative - Jim Vance

Copies of the recommendations made by the sub-committee for the Faculty Computer Initiative were distributed to members of the UTC. After reviewing these recommendations and without any suggested additions or changes, a motion was made and seconded to approve this report. It will now be presented to the Provost for approval.

III. CaTS Updates

A. Larry Fox reported that the main campus network upgrade has been completed. This includes the infrastructure in all closets on the main campus and residence halls. The equipment removed from these closets will be used at remote sites when upgrades are completed in spring. No maintenance contracts will be needed for the remote sites as there is an abundance of spare parts for replacement purposes. CaTS has completed its 10-year budget for network upgrades and the result is a $552,000 shortfall in the 2010-11 budget. Therefore, CaTS will be requesting additional funds from the Provost for these expenses.

B. CaTS is considering adding an 800 number for Help Desk calls. This will cost approximately $10,000/year. The committee approved this additional service.

C. Letters were distributed to all parties involved in the use of unauthorized wireless access points on campus, including students in the residence halls as well as other areas on campus, requesting that these be removed or brought up to university standards. CaTS has agreed to pay half the cost of replacing the access points for main campus locations only, not including residence halls.

D. All campus PC computers connected to the network that have the Novell client installed have been automatically updated with a virus-scanning agent. Residence hall users are currently being added and any WSU affiliated user can be added by visiting the following web page and downloading the product: http://www.wright.edu/cats/antivirus/. The total time to resolve problems during the most recent worm attack was approximately 5 hours, compared to 450 hours needed to resolve the previous attack.

E. Terry Anderson updated the members on the new portal project, which has now been named WINGS (Wright Info, News and Group Services). An advertising campaign will begin soon to promote this information. The address will be http://wings.wright.edu. The portal is on schedule to be deployed the beginning of spring quarter 2004. The email migration will take place the weekend of March 20. Email service will be unavailable for approximately 5 hours during this changeover period, but with no loss of email messages.

The committee is putting together a pilot group consisting of faculty and staff to test out the production portal beginning the last week in February. An email was distributed requesting volunteers to participate in this project.

The CaTS Help Desk staff has been preparing documentation and training for the new portal project. Several overview sessions have been held and more will follow.

A faculty focus group has been formed, chaired by Dr. Charles Taylor. Their charge is to review the course tools offered by the portal and identify the benefits for the university community.

IV. College Technology Plans

Chuck Taylor reminded the college representatives that the college technology plans need to be ready by the end of February. Then brief presentations to the UTC members will be made beginning with the March meeting. Once completed, a sub-committee will be formed to integrate all the reports into a final University Technology plan. The final plan should be completed by the end of spring quarter.

V. CTL Updates

Dan DeStephen announce that by the end of winter quarter, USB extension cables will be installed on computers in all electronic classrooms on campus. This will allow users to hook up USB devices. However, the faculty member must bring the disk that contains the device drivers for the appropriate hardware and will need to be re-installed each visit due to the re-imaging of the machine.

The next scheduled UTC meeting will be on Thursday, March 11, 2004 from 3:00 - 4:00 in 315 Dunbar Library.
