II. Third Frontier Network

Al Stutz, Ohio Super Computer Chief Operating Officer, gave a presentation and update on Ohio's Third Frontier Network Project.

III. RefWorks Product Demonstration
Bette Sydelko, Head of Reference and Instruction, Fordham Health Sciences Library, gave a demonstration of a new bibliographic management software program being considered for purchase by the University. This product provides a format for documenting bibliographic information for students and faculty. Further discussion regarding whether to purchase this product will be scheduled with the English Department. A request was made that if this product is to be purchased as a University site license, a portion of the student technology fee be used for funding purposes. Members of the committee agreed this would be a valid use of those funds.

IV. Omni Tech Buyout

Paul Hernandez informed the committee of the recent buyout of Omni Tech Corp. by MPC, formerly Micron PC. CaTS is optimistic this will be a smooth transition with no negative impact.

V. ERP Update

A university Web site has been created in order to give updated information on the University Systems Replacement Project (ERP). http://www.wright.edu/usr/

An open forum is scheduled for Friday, September 12 at 3:00p.m. for anyone interested in more information on this project. SCT will be conducting a corporate overview and product demonstration on Tuesday, September 16 from 3 - 4:30p.m. in the Berry Room I at the Nutter Center. Last Friday, the University was informed by Peoplesoft that they would be withdrawing and would not be responding to the RFP. Therefore, SCT will be the primary vendor participating in this bid process.

VI. Complaints Regarding SPAM

Due to numerous complaints regarding SPAM emails, CaTS staff will begin reviewing possible software products to eliminate this problem. When a satisfactory product is purchased, subscribing to the program will be done on a voluntary basis.

VII. Computer Virus Update

CaTS will be forcing another emergency patch to the operating system on Monday, September 15 to all University clients. An official communication will be sent out on the official listserv. Paul also discussed future security measures that are being considered for computers being brought on campus that are infected with viruses. Multiple firewalls will be installed to create layers of security on the University network. Therefore, it will be critical to identify the location of all research machines on campus, the IP address, the operating system being used, and whether it needs access to the network. The goal is to have these safeguards in place by the end of this academic year. This information should be submitted no later than October 31, 2003 to Larry Fox at: larry.fox@wright.edu

VIII. CTL Updates

Terri Klaus reported the WebCT upgrade went smoothly with no disruption to the users.

CTL sent out over 1,000 distance learning informational packets. The number of requests continues to grow each quarter.

Freshman English courses are now using WebCT.

IX. Announcements

Paul Hernandez announced the extension on the current Microsoft license agreement was signed by the IUC today. Therefore, the current agreement will continue through the end of June, 2004.

Jim Vance inquired as to the possibility of another faculty computer initiative again this year. Provost Hopkins said that the University will continue to support the initiative again this year.
