Approval of Minutes for March
The minutes of
the March meeting were approved as distributed.
Modem
Use on Campus - Paul Hernandez
It has been determined that there is a significant amount of modem usage for
outbound calls in offices on campus where high speed network connections are
available and, therefore, for the most part do not need the use of modems. This
ties up a voice trunk for a considerable amount of time. In order to save money,
CaTS will be cutting the number of voice trunks on campus. As a result, CaTS
staff will be contacting all users to determine the need for those modems and if
the campus network can accommodate their needs in place of the modems. Only
those modems determined to be necessary will be registered as viable devices.
Rogue
Wireless Access Points - Paul Hernandez
A situation occurred recently involving an individual who brought in a wireless
access point and plugged it into the network. Due to the configuration, it
crashed the network campus-wide. Therefore, CaTS is in the process of
identifying unknown wireless access points, determining the type as well as
correcting any mis-configuration. This process will occur during the summer and
into fall quarter.
RROX
Updates - Terry Anderson
-
On
April 16, CaTS deployed the service allowing students to request parking
permits via ROX. The charge will be on the Bursar bill along with their
fees.
-
Students
have been able to view Financial Aid award letters online for several weeks,
and as of this week can now accept, reject, or change the letters via ROX.
-
This
week the Budget Transfer electronic work flow form was deployed.
CTL
Updates - Dan DeStephen
There were no updates for this month.
Announcements
-
Bonnie
Mathies distributed copies of a memo regarding questions on insurance
coverage of university equipment which is loaned out to faculty, staff, and
students. It was decided that Dan DeStephen will contact Matt Filipic
regarding a possible policy to address this issue.
-
Barbara
Denison announced the 3rd Annual Dayton EC Forum eConference on May 13, 2003
from 8a.m. - Noon in WSU's Student Union.
-
Jim
Vance inquired about the possibility of cheaper long distance rates for the
university. Paul Hernandez replied that CaTS will be going out for bids on
long distance service in the very near future. CaTS is also experimenting
with IP telephony for possible implementation. However, there are several
significant problems with this at the present time and will continue to
investigate.
-
Perry
Moore announced the release this week of House Bill money. This information
will be distributed to the Deans in the near future.
-
Paul
Hernandez had several announcements:
a. The Cingular tower is up and the electronics are in the process of being
installed. Once this is completed, the fiber optic system will then be
deployed throughout the tunnels. CaTS is in the process of drafting an RFP
for Cingular telephone service. Hopefully, this will be deployed by the
beginning of fall quarter 2003.
b. 3rd Frontier Network Update - The backbone has been funded; the hookup of
the IUC schools does not have funding to complete all of this phase. It is
now being determined which schools will be hooked up first. Due to WSU's
location, it is likely to be one of the first schools to be connected by the
end of the year.
The
next scheduled UTC meeting will be on Thursday, June 12, 2003, in 267 University
Hall from 3-4p.m.
