UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES March 13, 2003
Attendees: Dan DeStephen, Chuck Taylor, Larry Fox, Stephen Foster, Barbara Denison, Sean Kleefeld, Jim Vance, Jeff Vernooy, Ron Dorsten, Mitch Wolff, Bonnie Mathies, Todd Brittingham, and Dave Sauter. Approval of Minutes for FebruaryThe minutes of last month's meeting were approved. Update on the University Support of Dedicated Spaces - Dave Sauter A. Dave Sauter reported on the new Space Utilization System (SUS) application being used by the Registrar's office to track scheduling of all University classrooms, equipment in classrooms and condition of rooms. When completed, this information will be available to the University community. This report will be used by a committee of faculty and staff who will be touring all classroom facilities during Spring Break 2003. Anyone interested in attending this tour, contact Dave Sauter at x5595 or email him at dave.sauter@wright.edu. B. Copies of a report on classroom information to the Facilities Advisory Committee and the University Technology Committee were distributed. C. A copy of an email sent to all faculty and staff participating in the campus classroom tours was also distributed. This message explained the purpose and schedules for these tours. CaTS Updates Larry Fox reported on the following: A. Pending Board of Trustees approval, CaTS will be replacing and upgrading most of the network hardware on campus, including the residence halls, due to very heavy utilization of the campus network. This will be done in three phases: Phase I: Replacement of servers on June 1, 2003 and the core on July 4, 2003 Phase II: Replacement of equipment in residence halls and oldest buildings after July 4. Phase III: The remaining buildings will be completed in the November/December timeframe. B. CaTS is in the testing phase of implementing an authentication process in classrooms in order to increase security on the network. C. WSU will soon announce the use of the university email as the official communication mechanism for students with regard to notification of grades and other official correspondence. D. CaTS will be reducing the number of supported Macintosh labs and UNIX workstations in the Library Annex. The 058 LX lab will now be be divided between Mac and UNIX stations. The 032 LX which is currently a Macintosh lab will be changed to a PC open lab. E. There are now approximately 20 wireless access locations on campus. An article will be published in The Guardian at the beginning of spring quarter notifying students of this service and the locations. The 008 LX lab has been converted into a wireless lounge for students which is now called "The HotSpot". The Russ Engineering Building has wireless access throughout the building. Announcements Jim Vance inquired on the status of the Ohio Board of Regents house bill monies and was informed that no funds have been released as of this date. Jim inquired on the status of the problem with Novell access for Mac OS X. Larry Fox said this is still a problem, but the staff in CaTS is currently working to solve the security issues. Jim Vance also presented a request from Dr. Michele Wheatly, Dean of Biological Sciences, for assistance regarding support for a server purchased with grant funds. It was decided that a meeting with Dr. Wheatly, Perry Moore, Dan DeStephen, and Paul Hernandez should be scheduled to discuss this situation. Bonnie Mathies distributed copies of the College of Education and Human Services "Classroom Wireless Laptop Computer Sets Policy". The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 10, 2003 from 3 - 4p.m. in 267 University Hall.
