Minutes for June meeting II. CaTS Updates Reduced Sign-On Project - Larry Fox distributed a hand out and discussed this project which will be implemented Winter Quarter. New E-mail System -- The new e-mail system, Novell NetMail, was explained. This will be implemented to the campus community during Spring Break 2003. Wireless Status -- CaTS is in the process of installing wireless networking in various areas on campus used for study and leisure by students. CaTS is in the process of a software transition for FTP & Telnet users. This is a change for security purposes and the software (Hummingbird) can be checked out in the University Library for installation. Managing Critical Updates on Windows 2000/XP Machines -- This is the last year for the University's current contract with Microsoft. As the cost for the new license will increase significantly, the University will not be purchasing operating system upgrades. III. CTL Updates Andy Montesano reviewed the status on various installation projects. 1. The audio/visual installation in Millett Hall have been completed. 2. The twelve computer labs and four electronic classrooms are ready. 3. As of September 6, the IVDL upgrade to the distance learning infrastructure was completed, including two classrooms -- 151 Dwyer at Lake Campus and 154 Rike Hall. George Frey reviewed the status of various classroom changes being performed before the start of Fall Quarter. All classrooms will now have an overhead projector, VCR and monitor. CTL staff will be making a final inspection of equipment before classes begin. Terri Klaus discussed CTL projects for Fall Quarter. 1. Distance Learning packets were mailed out to students offering forty on-line courses for Fall Quarter. 2. Terri also distributed a copy of the "WebCT News" handout. She discussed the new version of WebCT Campus Edition 3.8. There will be limited visible changes to the sign-on process when accessing the new version. Due to the move to this new edition, a new server will need to be purchased in the near future. 3. Information on the new Online Teaching and Learning Course for Winter Quarter, 2003 can also be found on the WebCT News handout. A concern was raised with regard to what constitutes an "on-line" course, a "web-enhanced" course, etc. It was suggested that a committee be formed to recommend guidelines for on-line classes. The Provost suggested the first step should decide what units of the University community should make up this committee. This will be discussed at a future UTC meeting. Acceptable Use Policy for Faculty and Staff -- Paul Hernandez IV. University Libraries Updates Pat Walker announced the completion of the Student Technology Assistance Center (STAC) located on the second floor of the Dunbar Library. The center will have 12 workstations and will be open 55 hours per week, including late evening hours. It will enable students to access software for creating technology-enhanced presentations. The meeting concluded with a tour of the new facility. The next UTC meeting will be on Thursday, October 10, 2002 from 3:00 --
